    • A method of operating a boom which comprises an elongate member mounted on a base for pivotal movement about a first axis transverse to the axis of the elongate member, first fluid operated power means mounted between the base and the elongate member to control raising and lowering of the member about said first axis, an implement mounted at one end of the member for pivotal movement about a second axis transverse to the axis of the elongate member, second fluid operated power means comprising a double acting ram having a cylinder and plunger slidable therein, mounted between the implement and the member to control movement of the implement about the second axis, means to feed fluid under pressure to and from the first fluid operated power means along first feed lines via a first operating valve, means to feed fluid under pressure to and from the second fluid operated power means along second feed lines via a second operating valve, a displacement means comprising a further double acting fluid operated ram connected between the member and the base to sense movement of the member about the first axis, fluid lines from the displacement means to the second fluid operated power means to transmit a signal to the second fluid operated power means to cause the second fluid operated power means to operate to maintain the orientation of the implement relative to the base as the implement is raised and lowered on the member, the method including the steps of providing fluid under pressure to the displacement means during raising of said one end of the elongate member, whereby said displacement means contributes to the raising of said one end of the member so that the design limit of the boom can be raised without having to increase the lifting capacity of the first fluid operated power means, while the orientation of the implement relative to the base can be maintained level during raising and lowering.

    • A vehicle having a tiltable load engaging bucket and elevatable booms connecting the bucket to the vehicle is provided with a control system having a pressure sensitive switch connected to sense the fluid pressure required to raise or tilt the bucket. The switch is adapted to actuate when the fluid pressure exceeds a level indicating that the bucket has encountered and obstruction in its work, and upon the switch''s actuation a governor is activated to reduce the speed of the vehicle''s engine so that the vehicle moves forward more slowly and the lifting bucket has an opportunity to lift past the obstruction.

    • This invention relates to a method for adjusting the position of the working equipment with which a public works machine is provided, which is constituted by a group of front drive wheels and a group of rear drive wheels, by said working equipment which is articulated to the frame of the machine, whilst a doubleeffect drive member is coupled between the working equipment and the frame and comprises two chambers connected selectively to a source of pressurised fluid and to a discharge tank or isolated from said fluid sources and discharge tank, according to which method the working equipment is disposed in a predetermined position, isolating said two chambers, and the displacement of the machine is controlled, wherein the position of the working equipment subsequent to the predetermined position is a function of the values of the resistant torques of the groups of front and rear wheels. It also relates to a public works machine applying the method as mentioned hereinabove.

    • There is disclosed a control circuit for actuating a hydraulically actuated boom and a hydraulically actuated implement associated with an earth-working mechanism whereby the actuation of the boom and the implement may be initiated solely by the closing of an electrical switch thereby enabling the operator of the earth-working mechanism to retain both hands on the steering wheel except for the short period of time when the switch is actuated. The control circuit comprises a first electrical circuit for automatically raising the boom and the implement, a second electrical circuit for automatically and continuously orienting the implement in a predetermined relationship with the boom, a third electrical circuit for automatically rotating the implement from a first position to a second position and wherein the third electrical circuit includes means for maintaining the implement in the second position for a preselected period of time and then automatically returning the implement to the first position, a fourth electrical circuit for lowering the boom and the implement, a fifth electrical circuit for automatically orienting the implement in a preselected angular relationship with the surface upon which the earthworking mechanism is located, and a sixth electrical circuit adapted to enable the boom and the implement to follow the surface upon which the earth-working mechanism is located. Each of these electrical circuits may be enabled in a preselected sequence by merely closing a switch which is located within easy access to the operator of the earth-working mechanism and in addition, a manual override control is available so that the operator may manually operate the boom and the implement in a conventional manner.
