    • Provided is a flood protection system for protecting an area from flooding water, wherein the area includes a trench defined at least along a portion of the boundaries thereof and a at least one depression on the side of the trench facing away from the area to be protected. The system comprising a barrier, configured for being at least partially fitted in the trench; and a float coupled to the barrier and being configured for at least partially is disposed in the depression. The float is configured for rising in response to a rise in the water level inside the depression and about the boundaries of the area. The float is further configured for lifting the barrier out of the trench therewith, thereby blocking the waters from entering the area.

    • A system and method to create or elevate a berm of a liquid retention facility by placement of lightweight fill material anchored by an impervious liner material(s). The impervious liner material is integral to a water retention system such as a containment system of a retention pond. The system and method can also be used to elevate the liquid retention height of a levee in combination with impervious liner retention material. By constructing the berm system on an existing levee, the effective height of the levee can be increased. The lightweight fill material provides the shape of the berm or levee extension. The liquid impervious liner material provides a watertight surface, the media for joining of the lightweight fill material, and the anchoring of the lightweight fill material to the existing berm or levee structure.

    • Disclosed is a foundation vent that provides air ventilation and flood relief for an enclosed area. A screen is included to prevent items such as insects, small animals, debris, and organic matter, including buoyant materials due to a flood, from entering the enclosed area. A removable screen and exterior screen stop allow the owner to easily inspect, maintain, clean, and repair the foundation vent. The foundation vent is also designed as a non-engineered, non-mechanical opening, which allows the air and flood water ratings of the foundation vent to be based upon the actual net clear open area. Such design eliminates the need for a vapor barrier and/or specialized structural engineering of the foundation. The dual operation of the foundation vent as a flood grate also allows rising flood water to penetrate and recede from the enclosed area, which equalizes the hydrostatic pressure on either side of the foundation wall.
