    • Aluminum alloy die castings combine good as-cast strength with good as-cast ductility, without any heat treatment. The alloy comprises 2.75 5.25 wt. % magnesium, 1.85-3.15 wt. % zinc, 0.65-1.2 wt. % manganese, 0.10-0.18 wt. % iron, less than 0.10 wt. % copper, less than 0.10 wt. % silicon, less than 0.20 wt. % titanium and the balance aluminum and incidental impurities and furthermore the percent by weight magnesium is greater than or equal to the percent by weight zinc. A particularly high strength version of the alloy comprises 4.75%-5.25 wt. % magnesium and 2.85-3.15 wt. % zinc. A particularly high ductility version of the alloy comprises 2.75-3.25 wt. % magnesium, 1.85 2.5 wt. % zinc.

    • This invention relates to the synthesis of a new generation of metastable aluminum-titanium (Al—Ti) alloys and the process of making them. The preparation method used is a combination process incorporating the advantages of conventional casting and spray techniques. The process is a low cost process. The aluminum-titanium materials made in this invention contain titanium in both the reacted and unreacted form. The results were confirmed using microstructural and x-ray diffraction studies. The presence of phases clearly indicate the metastable nature of these materials in accordance with the equilibrium phase diagram established for Al—Ti system. The Al—Ti materials can be made in the dimensions suitable for structural applications at ambient and elevated temperatures and as control materials for synthesis of more dilute equilibrium Al—Ti materials using conventional techniques such as casting.

    • The high-purity aluminum sputter target is at least 99.999 weight percent aluminum and has a grain structure. The grain structure is at least 99 percent recrystallized and has a grain size of less than 200 &mgr;m. The method forms high-purity aluminum sputter targets by first cooling a high-purity target blank to a temperature of less than −50° C. and then deforming the cooled high-purity target blank introduces intense strain into the high-purity target. After deforming, recrystallizing the grains at a temperature below 200° C. forms a target blank having at least 99 percent recrystallized grains. Finally, finishing at a low temperature sufficient to maintain the fine grain size of the high-purity target blank forms a finished sputter target.
