    • Novel water-compatible compositions are those of at least one vinyl ester resin whose backbone is linear or substantially linear and consists essentially of at least one terminal olefinically unsaturated group and at least one terminal pyridinium group covalently bonded through the pyridinium nitrogen atom. These novel compositions are useful adhesive and coating compositions which find particular utility in cathodic electrodeposition. The compositions are prepared, for example, by reacting a linear or substantially linear epoxy resin with an unsaturated monocarboxylic acid and then with a pyridine compound in the presence of sufficient amount of a Bronsted acid and water to stabilize the pyridinium salt thus formed.

    • A high bond strength, water reducible modified polyester resin composition is disclosed which comprises: (I) a polyester resin consisting essentially of the reaction product of a: (a) aromatic dicarboxylic acid or mixtures thereof; (b) tris (2 hydroxy alkyl) isocyanurate, organic polyhydric alcohol containing more than two hydroxyl groups or mixtures thereof; (c) saturated fatty acid, and (d) tricarboxylic acid and II additive consisting essentially of: (a) 8 wt. % to 30 wt. %, based on 100% polyester solids, of an aqueous solution of a water soluble, unmodified phenol-formaldehyde resin having an average molecular weight of below about 275; and (b) 20 wt. % to 55 wt. %, based on the polyester solids of water soluble urea-formaldehyde condensation products.

    • Aqueous thermosetting coating compositions adapted for roll coat application are disclosed in which water has dispersed therein an adduct of a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of at least 1.2 and an average molecular weight of from about 2000 to about 5000 with a stoichiometric proportion, based on epoxy and secondary amine, of diprimary amine having a single secondary amine group and each primary amine group blocked by a ketimine group. At least about 50% of the amine groups of this adduct are protonated with a volatile acid, and the ketimine groups hydrolyze in the water to provide primary amine functionality and ketone solvent in the aqueous medium. From 20% to 50%, based on total resin solids, of water insoluble, heat-hardening phenol-formaldehyde resin curing agent is employed for cure. The curing agents are added to the adduct in solution in water-miscible organic solvent, and cresol-formaldehyde curing agents are preferred.
