A METHOD OF PREPARING A HIGHLY CONCENTRATED RESINOUS LATEX HAVING A SOLIDS CONTENT OF 50-70% BY WEIGHT DIRECTLY BY EMULSION GRAFT POLYMERIZATION OF ETHYLENICALLY UNSATURATED MONOMERS ON AN ELECTROMERIC POLYMER OF CONJUGATED DIENE TYPE HYDROCARBON WHICH COMPRISES ADDING, EITHER INCREMENTALLY OR CONTINUOUSLY IN THE PRESENCE OF A FREE RADICAL GENERATOR, AN EMULSIFIER AND 92-20 PARTS BY WEIGHT OF MONOMERS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF MONOALKENYL AROMATIC MONOMERS AND MIXTURES THEREOF WITH ONE OR MORE ACRLYIC MONOMERS OF THE FORMULA:

      WHEREIN R IS A MEMBER SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF HYDROGEN AND METHYL AND X IS A MEMBER SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF -CN AND -COOR'', WHEREIN R'' IS AN ALKYL GROUP HAVING 1 TO 4 CARBON ATOMS, TO 8 TO 80 PARTS BY WEIGHT CALCULATED AS SOLIDS PORTION, OF A POLYMERIZED CONJUGATED DIOLEFINIC HYDROGEN-CONTAINING ELASTOMERIC, POLYMER LATEX, THE AVERAGE PARTICLE DIAMETER OF THE DISPERSED POLYMERIC PARTICLES OF WHICH IS AT LEAST 0.15 MICRON, SAID EMULSIFIER BEING ADDED IN AN AMOUNT CORRESPONDING TO THE AMOUNT OF SAID MONOMERS ADDED, AS DEFINED BY THE FOLLOWING FORMULA:

      WHEREIN W IS THE NUMBER OF PARTS BY WEIGHT OF THE EMULSIFIER THAT IS REQUIRED TO BE ADDED TO THE POLYMERIZATION SYSTEM PER 100 PARTS BY WEIGHT OF THE TOTAL CHARGE, WHEN A VOLUME V OF POLYMER AND MONOMERS IS PRESENT IN THE POLYMERIZATION SYSTEM, WITH THE PROVISO THAT WHEN W IS ADDED TO THE POLYMERIZATION SYSTEM, WO IS THE NUMBER OF PARTS BY WEIGHT, PER 100 PARTS BY WEIGHT OF THE TOTAL CHARGE, OR THE AMOUNT F EMULSIFIER PRESENT IN THE ELASTOMERIC POLYMER LATEX, AS CONVERTED ON THE BASIS OF THE EFFECTIVE MOLECULAR AREA OF THE EMULSIFIER USED IN THE EMULSION POLYMERIZATION REACTION, RO IS THE AVERAGE PARTICLE RADIUS (CM.) OF THE RADICALS OF THE ELASTOMERIC POLYMER LATEX, M IS THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF THE EMULSIFIER USED IN THE EMULSION POLYMERIZATION REACTION, S ID THE AREA COVERED (CM.2) PER MOLECULE OF THE EMULSIFIER USED IN THE EMULSION POLYMERIZATION REACTION, THE AVERAGE VALUE OF THE WEIGHT OF THE SEVERAL COMPONENTS BEING USED WHEN THE EMULSIFIER USED IS A MIXTURE, VO IS THE VALUE OBTAINED BY DIVIDING THE NUMBER OF PARTS OF THE ELASTOMERIC POLYMER BY THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF THE POLYMER, AND V IS THE VALUE OBTAINED BY ADDING THE VALUE VO TO THE VALUE OBTAINED BY DICIDING THE NUMBER OF PARTS BY WEIGHT OF THE MONOMERS ADDED TO THE POLYMERIZATION STSTEM AT A CERTAIN TIME DURING THE POLYMERIZATION BY THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF THE POLYMER WHICH SHOULD BE FORMED BY THE SAID MONO MERS ADDED UNITL THAT TIME, CONTINUING THE POLYMERIZATION AT A TEMPERATURE OF 40 TO 70* C. AND AT LEAST THE FINAL STAGE THE POLYMERIZATION IS CARRIED OUT IN AN EMULSION, THE SOLID CONTENT OF WHICH IS 50 TO 70% BY WEIGHT.
