    • A conveyor, in which continuous flights of steps in an endless form are guided by means of guide tracks, and a pair of handrails in an endless form are provided on each side of the flights of steps thereabove and moved at the same speed and in the same direction as those of the flights of steps. This conveyor includes: a pair of main frame bodies each consisting of a vertical member which is formed integrally with upper and lower horizontal members which extend from the top and bottom edges thereof in the horizontal direction, respectively; and transverse beams interconnecting the upper horizontal members of the aforesaid main frame bodies, and connecting members interconnecting the lower horizontal members of the main frame bodies at suitable points along the length of a conveyor. The pair of main frame bodies are positioned on each side of the aforesaid endless flights of steps, respectively.

The balustrade includes a composite deck formed of a metallic base member having an upstanding edge for mounting a handrail guide member, and an upper member formed of plastic. The metallic base member and non-metallic upper member are fixed together to form a structural box beam. A plastic handrail guide member is fixed to the upstanding edge of the base member, with the base of the handrail guide member being channeled to receive the upper edges of the upstanding balustrade panels.

    • A driving unit for driving the circulating step band of escalators which is arranged inwardly of the step band and includes an electric motor, a transmission and a hand rail drive. The output shaft of the transmission simultaneously serves as main drive shaft for the step band. The electric notor has a housing which is formed by a rotor which is journalled in an overhung manner on the input shaft of the transmission. The torque of the transmission is absorbed through the intervention of a torque support by a handrail drive shaft which is driven by a chain or a gear transmission.
