    • A veneer reeling apparatus for winding a veneer sheet around a freely rotatable take-up reel into a veneer roll. Veneer sheet is transferred by a plurality of spaced conveyer belts extending below the take-up reel. The take-up reel is removably supported by movable reel carriages for movement therewith toward and away from the conveyer belts. Each belts is urged toward the take-up reel to be kept in resiliently pressing contact with veneer roll for friction driving. There is provided a detector for monitoring an increment in diameter of the veneer roll during reeling operation and generating a signal in response to the detection of a predetermined amount of increment in the roll diameter and for detecting the force with which a roll member presses against the veneer roll and for generating a signal upon detection of a predetermined force in response to an increase in diameter of the veneer roll. A control responding to the signal from the detector provides a command signal to move the reel carriages hence the take-up reel carried thereby upward or away from the belt so as to compensate for the increment in diameter of the veneer roll.

    • A method and device are provided for producing a double roll fabric construction useful as a receptacle for, e.g., eyeglasses. The construction is comprised of adjacent rolled up portions disposed in side by side relation so as to be unrollable to form a receiving space therebetween. The rolling device includes a pair of spindles disposed in parallel relation and adapted to respectively receive opposite ends of a stretchable fabric so that rotation of the spindles causes rolling up of the fabric around the spindles. Respective pinion gears are mounted on the spindles and are disposed in engagement with, and ride along, a rack member. A drive unit produces movement of the pinion gears toward each other along the rack member so as to produce rotation of the second spindles and resultant wrapping of the fabric around the respective spindles to produce respective fabric rolls of the double roll fabric construction. After the construction is removed from the spindles, the ends are sewn to produce the receptacle.

    • An apparatus for winding tape includes a cantilevered support arm for supporting in a winding position a core onto which the tape is to be wound with a surface drive roller pivotal to a position engaging the outside of the package for causing rotation of the package in the driving position about a longitudinal axis of the arm. A lay-on roller directs the tape on to the core such that the rotation of the core acts to wind the tape into the package. The lay-on roller is driven by a lead screw in movement longitudinally of the axis to form a generally cylindrical package structure of the tape. With the lay-on roller in a retracted position to one side, the finished package on the support arm is moved by a rotatable drive head rotating about a vertical axis from the winding position away from the drive roller to a doffing position and simultaneously an empty core is moved from the doffing position over the drive roller to the winding position. The apparatus includes four winding positions at the corners of a rectangular frame so that each package at each of the positions is moved simultaneously to the doffing position outside the frame for ready access by an operator.

    • A plurality of core mounting ring members are rotationally slidably mounted on a drive shaft which has a central axial bore for receiving settable pressurized air. The ring members have an annular array of bores with core gripping buttons resiliently urged radially outwardly to grip a core receiving a winding strip thereabout. A central groove on an inner surface of each of the ring member is fluid coupled to the gripping button bores and to the drive shaft central bore for urging the buttons outwardly with pressurized air. The button bores are fluid coupled to two annular grooves on each side of the central ring member groove. A chlorinated quad O-ring is in each of the two annular grooves. Regulated pressurized air from the central groove flows through the button bores into the O-ring grooves urging the O-rings radially inwardly to both fluid seal the central groove and to provide a settable friction engagement with the drive shaft to settably control the speed and torque of the mounting ring members to provide a more uniform tension on the strips being wound.
