    • A differential impulse conveyor 10, 80, 90, 100 includes a tray 12 which is driven in a forward direction at a slow speed and a backward direction at a higher speed to slide goods with respect to the tray and thereby move goods along the tray. The drive motor 26, 27 powers the tray in the forward and backward directions through a drive shaft 40 and a tray crank 66, 106 interconnecting the drive shaft and the tray. Controller 84 is provided for varying the rotational speed of the motor shaft, thereby avoiding mechanical knock in the drive system. In another embodiment, a pair of counterweights 52, 62 are provided on opposing sides of the drive shaft 40, with respective counterweight cranks 46, 56 initiating forward movement of each counterweight at a preselected offset angular position with respect to forward movement of the tray. The differential impulse conveyor of the present invention substantially eliminates mechanical knocking in the drive system, thereby extending the useful life of the conveyor and minimizing the size of the conveyor components.

    • A bulk material handling conveyor system having a set of buckets carried in a continuous manner from an infeed zone where the buckets are filled with product by way of a metering vibratory feeder to an unloading zone and back to the infeed zone. The buckets may be selectively at least partially emptied in the unloading zone. The conveyor system also includes a proximity trigger for sensing the bucket at the infeed zone adjacent the metering vibratory feeder, a processing unit electrically connected to the proximity trigger for receiving and storing the output of the proximity trigger, a fill determining sensor mounted proximate the buckets between the infeed and unloading zones, the fill determining sensor being connected to the processing unit so that the processor receives and stores the fill status of the buckets upstream of the infeed zone, and a feeder control for cycling the metering vibratory feeder on and off responsive to signals from the processor, the processor signaling the feeder control to cycle on when a bucket is sensed by the fill determining sensor to be less than full.

    • A two mass vibratory material handling apparatus has a first mass that includes a vibration exciter of the rotary eccentric weight type and a second mass that includes an object to be vibrated. The two masses are interconnected by resilient elements designed to permit a desired vibration amplification from the vibration exciter to the object to be vibrated. The vibration exciter has a drive with an adjustable drive ratio located between a fixed r.p.m. at full voltage motor drive shaft and a shaft that rotatably supports eccentric weights. Variable pitch pulleys or a set of pulleys having various pitch diameters and provided so that pitch diameters can be selected therefrom for mounting one pulley on each shaft with a drive belt trained about the pulleys and thus, provide a drive ratio enabling the fixed frequency motor to drive the eccentric weights at a selected operating frequency. The resilient elements can be designed to amplify vibration along a predetermined line of attack or to flex in that direction while amplifying vibration perpendicularly thereto or to provide a combination of such vibration amplifications to impart an elliptical motion to the second mass. The apparatus can be manufactured without undue care in maintaining a designed spring rate for the resilient elements or maintaining the designed weight of the two masses since after manufacture and assembly, the apparatus can be fine tuned by weighing the two masses, measuring the amplitude of vibration of the mass including the object to be vibrated at a known frequency, selecting an operating frequency for obtaining a desired vibration stroke, and adjusting the drive ratio to operate at that frequency.
