    • A propeller assembly is disclosed, comprising propeller blades pivotably mounted on a propeller hub. A cam follower is disposed on each propeller blade. A cam is movable between a first position, a second position and a third position. Recesses formed in the cam have a first segment, a second segment and a third segment, oriented at first, second and third angles. The first segment is oriented at a first angle relative to the central axis. The cam followers engage the first segment of the recesses when the cam moves between first and second positions to vary the pitch of the propeller blades between a first pitch and a second pitch. The cam followers engage the second segment of the recesses when the cam moves between second and third positions to vary the pitch of the propeller blades between the second pitch and a third pitch.

    • A propeller assembly has first and second propeller blades pivotably mounted on a propeller hub. The first and second propeller blades are pivotable with respect to the propeller hub about corresponding first and second pivot axes to vary a pitch of the first and second propeller blades. A support member has a first end at least partially disposed within the first propeller blade and a second end at least partially disposed within the second propeller blade. The first end has a first central longitudinal axis generally coaxial with the first pivot axis. The second end has a second central longitudinal axis generally coaxial with the second pivot axis. A gear case having a propeller and a marine outboard engine having a propeller are also disclosed.

    • There is provided a self-actuating variable pitch marine propeller which incorporates two or more blades, each independently rotatable, relative to the propeller hub, between a first lower and a second higher pitch. The blades are preferably mechanically linked by coordinating means and are caused to move preferably by a combination of centrifugal force effect resulting from inertial mass means and the hydrodynamic forces acting upon the blade hydrodynamic surface. The rotation of the blades relative to the propeller hub is limited primarily as to speed of rotation by restricted viscous fluid flow damping means operably connected to the blades. In one preferred embodiment, the viscous flow means further acts as an initial restraint against all motion by closing off the viscous flow orifice until a certain minimum propeller rotational speed is achieved.

    • A controllable pitch propeller assembly has an inner housing attached to a main drive shaft, the housing having rails on the outer surface thereof. Modules carrying the propeller blades are positively mounted on the rails, each module having a housing receiving a hub cylinder and bushings axially aligned at opposite sides thereof. Each pair of bushings receives an adjusting piston having an adjusting pin which engages a groove forming a control path in a propeller hub. Each blade is adjusted by a control lever which adjusts each adjusting piston through a mechanical linkage including an adjusting sleeve and a thrust bearing and flange. The hub is provided with open spaces formed between the inner and outer housings to create hub through exhaust ducts.

    • A combination motor boat propulsion and steering control system is shown which is particularly adapted to planing hull, high speed boats. The invented combination will eliminate the need for a rudder in such craft by providing dual variable pitch propellers, differentially pitch controlled for steering, and provides for water contact only up to the hubs of counterrotating propellers, thereby minimizing drag. Forward-reverse control and optimized speed control (while maintaining high power transfer efficiency) are effected by superimposed separate control of propeller pitches together in the same sense.
