    • A hydraulic lock of a tiller-based watercraft steering system is responsive to tiller release to lock a watercraft's steered element in the last commanded position upon tiller release. The hydraulic lock can be controlled through an actuator assembly that is provided between a tiller arm and the watercraft's steered element. One or more cables connect the actuator assembly to other components of the hydraulic lock. A thermal compensator regulates pressure within the hydraulic lock by accommodating changes in temperature related characteristics of the fluid within the hydraulic lock Increases in fluid pressure due to thermal expansion can be mitigated within the thermal compensator by automatically or manually directing a volume of fluid from the hydraulic lock, through a compensating valve assembly, and into a reservoir. Decreases in fluid pressure can be mitigated by directing fluid from the reservoir back into the hydraulic lock.

    • An assembly (10) for connection between a steering wheel (12) and a steerable member (14) includes a clutch mechanism (28) operatively connected to the steering wheel (12) and a drive mechanism (30) connected between the clutch mechanism (28) and a push pull cable (22). The push pull cable (22) is in turn connected to the steerable member (14). The clutch mechanism (28) prevents torsional forces from the steerable member (14) to be transmitted to the steering wheel (12). The clutch mechanism (28) includes a driving dog (38) connected to the steering wheel shaft (18) and a pinion member (40) connected to the drive mechanism (30). The driving dog (38) includes three radially extending legs (44, 45, 46) and the pinion member (40) includes arcuate arms (64, 65, 66) extending therebetween. Rollers (84-89) are biased by springs (96-98) to be wedged between the arms (64, 65, 66) and housing (32), and are released only upon rotation of the legs (44, 45, 46).

    • An improved rudder steering apparatus for ships is disclosed including a rudder-jam-responsive device for automatically disconnecting the tiller from the rudder shaft upon the occurrence of jamming or wedging of the rudder. A pair of cam track levers pivotally connected with a plate mounted on the rudder shaft are normally biased by an hydraulic piston-cylinder motor into engagement with a follower that is connected with the tiller. The motor is automatically operable by an overload-responsive device (such as a pressure-relief safety valve or an accumulator tank) to disconnect the levers from the follower device when the rudder is in a wedged or jammed condition.

    • A multi-functional sailboard includes a body having a seating section and a dagger. A mast section is connected to the bow of the body and is movable between raised and lowered positions. The mast section includes a stationary mast and a movable mast. The two may be coupled together and slide along a substantially vertical path. The mast section is maintained by a halyard tied to a cleat and a hook and loop fastener is attached to the sail that secures it to the movable mast. A back rest extends upward from the body. A sculling section is secured to the body and includes a traveler, an eye clip, and a cord connected to the eye clip and rudder. The sculling section also includes a spring connected to the rudder and back rest. The rudder returns to an equilibrium position when moved from side-to-side.
