    • A release mechanism is provided for a structural member, such as a cylindal object recovery device, wherein the structural member has top and bottom sides. The release mechanism includes a block which is attachable to the structural member so as to extend thereabove. A piston is mounted in the block and is moveable vertically between up and down positions. At least one rod is connected to the piston and extends vertically downwardly beyond the bottom side of the structural member so as to be capable of moving the piston to the upward position when forcibly engaged by the object. A U-shaped holder is fitted over the block with each leg of the holder having a recess. A pair of pistons is laterally mounted in the U-shaped block in an opposing relationship, and each piston is moveable between inward and outward positions. Each lateral piston is engageable with the holder within the holder recess in the outward position so as to retain the U-shaped holder to the block, and each lateral piston clears the respective holder recess in the inward position so as to release the U-shaped holder from the block. A rod is connected to each lateral piston and extends inwardly within the block for engagement and disengagement with the vertical piston as the vertical piston moves from its down position to its up position. A spring arrangement is provided for biasing each lateral piston toward the inward position. Each rod maintains the respective lateral piston in its outward holder engaging position when the lateral piston rod is in engagement with the vertical piston. Further, each rod allows the respective lateral piston to be spring biased to its inward disengaged position with respect to the holder when the lateral piston rod is disengaged from the vertical piston. With this arrangement forcible engagement of the bottom of the vertical rod with the cylindrical object will cause the vertical piston to move upwardly and allow the lateral pistons to move inwardly to release the U-shaped holder from the block and the structural member.

    • A recovery tool is designed to be actuated by the manipulator of an under vehicle. The undersea vehicle approaches an object to be recovered and its manipulator arm grips a pair of spring biased actuators. Linkage or lever arms extend from each of the actuators to off-center portions of a pair of pivotally mounted tongs. Squeezing the actuators together separates the tongs and they are placed about the object. When the pressures are released, the actuators force the tongs to grasp the object. A hoisting cable, coupled in a centrally in-lined position with respect to the tongs, hauls the object upward which causes the tongs to grip the object more securely.

    • An apparatus for attaching a hoisting cable to a sunken vessel is configured to be pulled-down onto a cone-shaped line anchor. The device is pulled down onto the line anchor when the hoisting cable and marker-buoy line are drawn in opposite directions by a pair of surface ships. Having the ships draw the hoisting cable and the marker buoy line in opposite directions prevents the cable and line from becoming entangled to allow connection to the sunken vessel and to reduce the hazard of inadvertently separating the more fragile marker-buoy line.

    • A catamaran lifting apparatus is disclosed for lifting objects in a marine environment. The apparatus includes first and second vessels that are spaced apart during use. A first frame spans between the vessels. A second frame spans between the vessels. The frames are spaced apart and connected to the vessels in a configuration that spaces the vessels apart. The first frame connects to the first vessel with a universal joint and to the second vessel with a hinged connection. The second frame connects to the second vessel with a universal joint and to the first vessel with a hinged or pinned connection. The catamaran hull arrangement provides longitudinal flexibility in a quartering sea state due to the unique universal joint and hinge placement between the frames or trusses and the hulls or barges. Each of the frames extends upwardly in an inverted u-shape, providing a space under the frame and in between the barges that enables a marine vessel to be positioned in between the barges and under the frames. In this fashion, an object that has been salvaged from the seabed can be placed upon the marine vessel that is positioned in between the barges and under the frames. Alternatively, a package that is to be lifted from the deck of a marine vessel, workboat, supply boat or the like can be lifted from the deck of the workboat, vessel, barge, etc. if it is to be then placed in the marine environment such as upon an existing jacket or other under support.
