    • An empty/load changeover valve device for a railway car having a proportioning valve via which the car control valve supplies brake cylinder pressure. The proportioning valve comprises a balance piston having equal opposing pressure areas and a combined supply and release check valve, one pressure area of the balance piston being subject to air pressure supplied to the brake cylinder under all conditions of loading. The opposing pressure area of the balance piston is either pressurized or depressurized depending upon the car being in an "empty" or "load" condition, thereby establishing either a nonproportioning or a proportioning mode of brake control. Integrating the release check valve with the supply valve so as to have a smaller effective pressure area, the release check valve can be opened with low force to exhaust brake cylinder pressure during brake release, thereby making possible a reduced size empty/load changeover valve device.

    • This invention relates to a railway vehicle brake apparatus wherein an air operated load compensating relay valve device is disposed between and rigidly secured to both a brake control valve of the graduated release type and the control reservoir for this brake control valve. A plurality of passageways extend through the load compensating relay valve device to provide communications through which fluid under pressure is supplied from the control reservoir and also an auxiliary reservoir to the brake control valve that has a supply and release valve mechanism which is operable in response to variations of pressure in a train brake pipe relative to a constant pressure maintained in the control reservoir to effect the supply of fluid under pressure from the auxiliary reservoir to the load compensating relay valve device to cause a brake application or to release fluid under pressure from this relay valve device to atmosphere to cause a release of a brake application.

    • An electronic load weigh device is used with a railcar truck control unit. A relay valve provides to a brake cylinder a pressure proportional to the pressure impinging upon its control port. A first feedback signal is indicative of the pressure at the control port. A second feedback signal is indicative of the load borne by the truck. A pressure switch opens when pressure within a trainline changes to a level indicative of an emergency. By controlling the opening and closing of application and release magnet valves, a controller controls the pressure impinging on the control port and thereby service braking of the wheels of the truck. The load weigh device includes (i) circuitry for electronically compensating for the load during braking and (ii) a mechanism for granting the circuitry exclusive control over the magnet valves. Should such emergency occur, the mechanism responds to such emergency by disconnecting the controller from the magnet valves. This gives the circuitry exclusive control over the magnet valves. The circuitry compensates for the load borne by the truck during emergency braking by selectively opening and closing the magnet valves, according to predetermined criteria using the feedback signals, thereby controlling the magnitude of the pressure impinging upon the control port. Absent such emergency, the mechanism responds to such absence by connecting the controller to the magnet valves whereby such service braking on the truck is normally controlled, yet the circuitry is still enabled to compensate for the load during such service braking.
