A rear rail retaining mechanism is used to lock the rear rail member or unlock the rear rail member and urge the rear rail member upward.

    • A container covering system for open truck containers provides enhanced control and maneuverability of a tarp for covering containers of different sizes. A tarp can be extended and retracted under rotary movements of elements of the system to adapt for different lengths of containers. A tarp device includes the tarp, which can move between a stowed position and an extended position to cover the top of an open container. A pair of forward arms are pivotable with respect to a first pivot axis defined on the device. A pair of rear arms are pivotable respect to second pivot axis that is defined on the rear ends of the forward arms. A cross member extends between the end of the rear arms which are opposed to the second pivot axis. The cross member retains the leading end of the tarp and is movable with the rear arms. The rear arms are biased to rotate towards the rear end of the container. A biasing member is configured to rotate the rear arms around the second pivot axis. A torque generating device applies a resistive force on the tarp against the rotational bias of the rear arms to retract the leading edge of the tarp.

A tarpaulin which goes over the top area of the configuration is supported by bows (1) which are arranged in predetermined, regular distances from each other and which span over the width of the loading area and which are supported at the longitudinal belts of the configuration. Said bows are supported at both ends horizontally as well as vertically by means of a roller trolley (5) or a corresponding roller arrangement which encompass the longitudinal belts at least partially. Said bows are guided in the longitudinal direction along complementary configured guide rails of the upper longitudinal belts of the construction. The aim of the invention is to provide for a bow configuration which allows to easily create single-piece bows of any form or size together with the necessary bearings for support rollers and guide rollers. It is also the aim of the invention to provide for a sufficient hardness of the areas of the bow which form the roller trolleys. To this end, the shaft of the bow (2) is configured as one piece together with the roller trolleys (5) which guide and support the shaft at both ends of the guide rails of the upper longitudinal belts of the configuration.

    • An improved tarp cover system for covering the open-topped container body of a vehicle is characterized by the provision of generally U-shaped inverted hold-down arm that is pivotally connected with the front wall of the container body and that is spring biased to apply a downward force on the front portion of the cover when the container is in the completely closed condition, thereby to reduce flapping of the cover during transport. The flexible tarp cover is wound on a roll that is rotatably supported adjacent the front wall of the container. In a first embodiment, to cover the container, the free end of the cover is displaced rearwardly of the container by a cover arm that is pivotally connected with the side walls of the container. The cover arm is biased toward its rearmost container covering position by a pair of side mounted spring arrangements that include compression springs that are concealed within the hollow leg portions of the cover arm. A locking arrangement is provided for automatically locking the cover arm in its rearmost position when the tarp completely covers the container. In an alternate embodiment, the cover is unwound from the roll by a transverse member that is manually pulled to the rear of the container by a pull rope. The cover is wound on the roll by an electric motor that is connected with the roll via a planetary gearing arrangement, or by a spring motor.

    • A system for manipulating a transport container cover using a variable height gantry or other elevator mechanism. In one embodiment, a gantry supports an assembly for storing the cover including a winding mechanism, the gantry height being adjustable so that the cover may be raised above the top of the transport container for unfurling. In a second embodiment, the cover storage assembly is mounted on a dump truck body by a support which may include an elevator mechanism to raise the storage assembly above the container top. In a third embodiment, the storage assembly is mounted on the cab end of the tilt frame of a container truck. The tilt frame in its raised position, elevates the storage assembly above the container top. When the storage assembly is in the raised position the cover is unfurled over the top of the container and the cover is secured over the container by an attachment mechanism on the back end of the container or truck. The storage assembly is adjusted to a lower position for transporting the covered container. The storage assembly includes a winding mechanism for withdrawing the cover and re-rolling the cover. The winding mechanism may be operated by a hand crank, or may include a spring loaded roller, or may be motor driven.

The clamp-on track assembly includes a track having an elongate body mountable on the side wall of the pickup truck by a clamp member. One end of the clamp member engages the elongate body, while the opposite end of the clamp is supported by the underside of the side wall of the truck. The clamp may be slidably received within a slot formed in the elongate body so that the clamp can be positioned anywhere along the length of the track, as desired. An adjustable fastener may additionally be provided which, when tightened, secures the clamp to the underside of the side wall of the truck in order to mount the track assembly. When the fastener is loosened the clamp is released from engagement with the truck's side wall so that the track assembly may be removed from the truck The clamp member may also be formed of two pieces, with one of the pieces being pivotable relative to the other.
