At least two adjustable clamps are carried by the base for clamping respective opposite edges of the artwork. In this manner, the artwork is secured to the base without either being touched or damaged thereby. Each of the clamps is selectively moveable along respective axes. This permits the precise positioning of the respective clamps to be selectively adjusted to accommodate artworks of various sizes and shapes. Preferably a stationary clamp is also carried by the base.

摘要： An improved technique for the restoration of paintings, documents and the like and in particular an improved apparatus for and associated method of lining a painting or document to restore and preserve the original texture thereof. For paintings with good texture requiring only lining, a cold adhesive system is preferably used employing a substrate adhesively coated on both sides finished with a lining cloth. For paintings having a surface that is intact but with irregularities (cuping) heat is applied preferably with a hot table accompanied with the use of softening solvents and controlled lateral tension is applied to the painting using a mechanical strainer constructed in accordance with this invention to apply lateral tension in all directions to correct deformations in the surface plane of the painting. The lining of the painting may then be accomplished by a cold or hot adhesive process. For paintings in poor condition having internal imperfections such as loosened or flaking paint, the above steps may be used along with the application of an electrostatic field, rather than with the use of vacuum forces which tend to damage the surface texture of the painting, to preserve and return the painting's original surface texture.

摘要： A process for integrating and permanently conserving an oil painting on canvas first eliminates stresses in the paint film induced by the original canvas by breaking down the weave of the canvas through physical abrasion or other means for severing the loops without damaging the paint film. The stress relieving step is followed by integrating the paint film, the original ground layer, remnants of old canvas, and a new dimensionally stable backing layer of material having an estimated life comparable to the expected life of the paint film. Integration is accomplished by means of a liquid coherant that cures to a permanent flexible material that provides a continuous bond between the paint film and the new backing layer. The coherant has a life expectancy comparable to that of the backing layer, with no deleterious physical or chemical effects on the paint film.
