    • A marking apparatus provides a method of marking a line on a surface of a workpiece at a selected distance from a datum edge of the surface. To practice this method a scribe retaining apparatus is attached to a ruling blade of a geometrical instrument so that it can slide along an axis of the ruling blade. A stock of the geometrical instrument is then brought into abutting contact with the datum edge and held against it at an angle selected so that a first, flat, portion of a bottom of the scribe retaining apparatus abuts the surface of the workpiece. In this orientation a working tip of a retained scribe is adjacent to, but out of contact with, the surface of the workpiece. One then slides the scribe retaining apparatus axially along the ruling blade until the working tip of the scribe is at the selected distance from the datum edge, and locks the scribe retaining apparatus to the ruling blade. The stock of the geometrical instrument is then rotated about the axis of the ruling blade to bring a second portion of the bottom of the scribe retaining apparatus into contact with the surface of the workpiece. In this position the working tip of the scribe is in operative marking contact with the workpiece. One then slides the stock of the geometrical instrument along the datum edge to mark the line at the selected distance.

    • The invention is an improved, hand-held, adjustable, graduated marking gauge and scribe for carpentry and related activities. It is used to mark work-pieces at a given distance from an adjacent edge or intersecting surface such as is encountered when fitting cabinets or trim to uneven wall surfaces, or in the spiling of boat planking or the marking of cut-outs relative to an edge. The device consists of a main body, upon which are etched scales and which is bent and formed at one end to create an edge follower and a corner follower and upon which is mounted a sliding and fixable instrument holder which holds marking, cutting or other instruments, inserted therein, in an adjustable fashion. The displacement of the centre-line of the marking instrument relative to the edge follower or the corner follower is read on the scales at the corresponding side of the instrument holder.

    • A tape measure, also called a nulltape rulenull and a nullcoilable rule,null includes a coilable rule housing and a retractable measuring blade with a free end that extends out of the housing. The measuring blade of one embodiment includes numerals arranged to be viewed right side up when holding the housing in the left hand with the measuring blade extending from the housing toward the right, together with one-eighth-inch graduations and blue-colored off-measurement numerals between the twelve-foot and the eight-foot marks.

    • An adjustable measuring and marking device is provided. The device has a lower portion with a bottom end and an upper end and an upper portion with a bottom end and an upper end. The upper portion telescopically interconnects with the lower portion. Measurement intervals, such as inches, are marked along the upper and lower sections so that one can use the device as a measuring apparatus. Measurements can be read at the upper end of the bottom portion, off the top portion, in inches, as well as in feet and inches. A friction fit exists between the upper and lower sections so that a measurement obtained by extending the upper section from the lower section so that the entire device is positioned between two points, can easily be transferred to another location, as the relative position of the upper and lower sections are maintained by the friction fit. Overextending the upper portion out of the lower portion is prevented by a locking pin device. A plurality of markers can be attached to the device, at desired locations therealong, for marking desired locations on a surface. Such markings are accomplished by placing the device at a desired location, and twisting one's wrist to move the plurality of marking devices against a surface to place marks thercon.
