摘要： In a card sorting machine, cards having coded tooth trains at the lower edges and magnetic pieces at the front edges are placed on a group of select bars. By selectively raising the select bars, the magnetic piece of the selected cards are attracted to a selecting magnet for having the cards moved at first for one pitch in the horizontal direction and then in an oblique upward direction. A card holding magnet is further provided which holds the selected cards at the oblique upward position upon transfer from the selecting magnet.

A light source with a fiber optic secured to the selector transmits light from the light source to the card selector and to the diode for each card. Individual buttons corresponding to individual index lines of the displayed card can be manually activated to retrieve a telephone number stored in the memory for automatic dialing thereof.

摘要： In an index selector device of the kind for use with a stack of index cards housed between a base and a lid hinged together and having a selector on the lid to release the lid after moving card-engaging members into engagement with a card so as to raise all the cards in the stack above the one required, the selector is a plurality of push buttons, one to each card-engaging member, arranged in two rows at right angles to the hinge. Interengaging inclined surfaces on each push button and card-engaging member cause lateral sliding movement of the card-engaging member on depression of the push button. A hook on the card-engaging member moves under the edge of the card above the one required and co-operating inclined surfaces on the inner end of the card-engaging device and a central catch bar cause the catch bar to release the lid. A barb on the card-engaging member hooks into a recess on the catch bar to hold the card-engaging member in the card-engaging position while the lid is open. A tongue on the catch bar which yields when the lid opens strikes an abutment as the lid closes and pushes the catch bar back to disengage the barb from the recess and release the card-engaging member to its normal position.

The index has an outer housing with a slideable drawer which carries a stack of cards carrying the information, such as names, addresses and telephone numbers. The tray has a series of manual selection members, which are each engageable with a perforated tab on an associated card of the stack, irrespective of the position on the stack of that card. The selection members comprise bell cranks and magnetic means hold all cards other than that selected within the housing.
