    • An improved quiet impact printer mechanism for use with a typewriter or printer which includes a print hammer having a significant mass for impacting a character pad against an ink ribbon, paper and a platen. A first embodiment has a drive means providing insignificant inertia through the use of a cam driven by an inexpensive, low torque reversible motor which is coupled to the hammer through a cam follower. The cam arrangement may also propel the hammer toward the platen under a predetermined series of controlled velocities. A second embodiment of a printer mechanism, similar to that described above, includes a rotary member driven by a motor link, coupled to the print hammer for moving the hammer toward and away from the platen. The motor link includes an acoustic noise reducing means.

    • In a print hammer mechanism in which a thin, flat hammer spring is mounted at a fixed end thereof to a magnetic structure which includes a permanent magnet and a pole piece having a pole tip facing the opposite free end of the hammer spring on a side of the hammer spring opposite an impact printing tip, a pivot fulcrum is formed by an impact arrangement which faces an intermediate portion of the hammer spring between the fixed and free ends thereof. The permanent magnet normally pulls the hammer spring into a retract position in which the spring impacts and resides against the impact structure with the free end of the spring forming an air gap with the pole tip. Energization of a coil surrounding the pole piece releases the hammer spring from the retract position, enabling the spring to return toward a neutral position and then impact a printable medium such as a print paper-ink ribbon combination, following which the magnetic attraction of the permanent magnet returns the hammer spring to the retract position in which it strikes the impact structure and remains in the retract position pending the next energization of the coil. The location of the impact arrangement is such as to greatly minimize wear at its interface with the hammer spring while at the same time enhancing the release characteristics of the hammer spring.In a preferred embodiment the impact structure is formed by a secondary pole piece extending in parallel, spaced-apart relation along a portion of the length of the hammer spring from the fixed end thereof and terminating in a pole tip covered with a thin layer of Kapton.

    • An impact printing mechanism is disclosed having an electrostatic clutch assembly, including a rotatively mounted semiconductive coated drum and a conductive band wrapped around the circumference thereof. The printing mechanism includes a printing hammer and a print spring for actuating the printing hammer. When a print command is issued, a voltage is applied to the band to create a field between the band and the drum coating. An electrostatic force is therefore generated when the drum is rotating slowly or synchronous with the drum step motion. That motion will pull the band and compress the print spring. The potential energy stored in the spring is then ready to fire the hammer. A hammer firing command turns off the voltage pulse and discharges the field, releasing the electrostatic holding force instantaneously and firing the hammer by the compressed spring.

    • A print hammer mechanism with a flexible interposer selectively moveable from a normal position into the path of a rotating impeller tooth which engages the interposer driving it and the associated hammer toward a print line to impact a print medium with a type die on a moving carrier. The interposer is flexible in the plane of motion of the hammer and the impeller tooth which allows slower and more controlled acceleration of the hammer and enhances the wear of the materials used to fabricate the hammer, interposer and impeller tooth. Uncontrolled oscillation of the flexible interposer and, hence, multiple strikes and multiple rebounds from the print hammer backstop are prevented by means of a mechanical linkage which captivates the interposer to the hammer for travel with the hammer but also allows the interposer to move from its normal position into the path of the impeller tooth and to return to its normal position.

    • A high speed line printer includes a print-receiving medium, a continuously moving type carrier, a ribbon positioned between the print-receiving medium and the type carrier, and a bank of hammer units having individually fired but simultaneously retracted hammers positioned adjacent the print-receiving medium. Each hammer is magnetically retracted and held against the force of a flat spring armature. Upon release of a hammer, the stored mechanical energy of the spring causes the hammer to be driven to a printing impact and a damper prevents subsequent printing impacts due to hammer oscillation. Each hammer unit comprises a pole piece with a convex pole face and a hammer which includes the flat spring armature secured at one end to the pole piece and an impact element mounted on the outer surface of the armature at the other, free end thereof. The damper has a low mass body which includes energy absorbing material and is spring biased to a normal position in contact with the impact element. The utilization of multiple impacts between the damper and hammer permits the damper mass to be reduced so as to reduce the total movable mass, thereby decreasing hammer flight time and increasing efficiency. An interposer is operable to prevent the printing of an unwanted line by inhibiting the flight of the hammers in the event of an error condition such as a power failure.

    • A row of actuator arms, such as electromagnet armatures used in operating a teleprinter, are pivotably mounted in closely spaced parallel relationship. A support frame or chassis is formed with a positioning plate assembly defining a sharp crotch at approximately a 90* angle, which defines the desired axis of pivoting. The arms are formed with a portion along one surface formed at an acute angle defining a knife edge. The arms are mounted in the frame, as with individual springs, so that the knife edges are urged into the crotch and the arms are freely pivotable in the crotch between first and second positions, such as the actuated and de-actuated positions of an electromagnet armature. Slotted guides are provided on either side of the pivot to limit the pivoting movement to preset parallel planes. The armatures are initially assembled with a guide and carrier bracket, outside of the machine, prior to final assembly of the bracket and the chassis. Flat end surfaces of electromagnet cores, which serve as stops for the arms in the actuated positions, are machined to be precisely coplanar with one flat surface of the positioning plate assembly defining the crotch.
