    • A speed typing method and apparatus having multiple letters associated with each key of a keyboard. By utilizing multiple characters on each key, fewer than 26 letter keys may be employed. Each key on the keyboard is associated with a numerical code. The system uses the numerical code associated with a typed word to access a dictionary or table of words stored in memory at a memory location corresponding to the input numerical code. The system may display all of the words available to the user in response to the input code. The user then selects one of the available words to be placed in the document. Alternatively the system may enable display of one or more preferred words.

    • A miniature keyboard assembly for generating code signals representative of selected characters and functions. The assembly including at least one but preferably, two glide keys, each coupled to a depressible keybutton for controlling the movement of its respective keybutton. In one embodiment, each keybutton base carries an electrically conductive layer and is slidable on a membrane panel having thereon a plurality of signal code generating switches. The keybutton being movable along orthogonal axes in response to movement of the glide key. Each keybutton extends upwardly through a longitudinal slot opening in a lateral slide support member and then through a fitted opening in an indicator panel. The indicator panel also include an indicia marker which underlies a transparent keyboard panel and is visible therethrough. Finger movement of the glide key causes the marker to indicate the character or function on the keyboard representative of the signal code to be generated by the switch over which the keybutton is positioned. Depression of the keybutton results in the activation of the switch and the generation of the selected signal code.

    • Apparatus for imprinting variable data onto a document disposed over print elements, the apparatus comprising a print bed having at least one opening therein, at least one settable print member having a plurality of the print elements disposed thereon, the print member being so disposed with respect to the print bed that at least one of the print elements projects through the opening for positioning in the print bed, setting means for setting the print member so that the one print element is positioned in the print bed, the setting means including (a) selector means for selecting which of the plurality of print elements is to be positioned in the print bed, the selector means being movable to a plurality of predetermined positions respectively corresponding to the plurality of print elements and being located in approximate alignment with the print member along the print bed; (b) flexible connector means fixedly connected to the print member and the selector means; and (c) pulley means for supporting the flexible connector means and changing the direction thereof so that the selector means may be located in any predetermined relationship with respect to the settable print member, and means for moving a roller platen along the print bed to effect imprinting from the print elements onto the document, detenting means for accurately positioning the selected print element in the print bed, and the setting means including positive positioning means for insuring that the detenting means does accurately position the selected print element whereby movement of the selector means to one of the predetermined positions will be transmitted through the flexible connector means to effect movement of the print member so that the print element corresponding to the one predetermined position will be positioned in the print bed.

    • An alphanumeric data entry system for chordic keyboards permits the entry of vowels with the thumb and digits of the left hand and the entry of consonants with the thumb and digits of the right hand in combination with vowel chords from the left hand. Only the thumb, index, middle and ring digits of the left and right hands, respectively, are necessary for manipulation of 2 four-key sets. The keyboard can either be a conventional side-by-side keyboard or, alternatively, an 8 dot braille keyboard in which the two sets are arranged in two rows in a substantially parallel relationship to each other. The number mode is initiated by depressing all four digits of the right hand and then entering numbers beginning with the ring digit of the left hand as the lowest integer and proceeding in a reverse binary fashion from left to right with the numbers 0 through 9 entered by the left hand. The system can switch functions by depressing the index, middle and ring digits of the right hand and then entering the desired function code with the digits of the left hand. Some of the other functions possible are common math operators, containment chords, movement chords, operating chords, monetary and graphic chords, foreign language chords, etc. Because of the left to right nature of the data entry, the system is relatively easy to learn and fast to use. It is especially suited for handicapped and sight disabled individuals as a substitute for braille.

    • The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for driving and controlling a thermal head used in a printing device, such as a tape printer, in response to the temperature variations of the printing device environment and the thermal head. According to the present invention, in the printing operation of the tape printer, measurements are made of the initial temperature T1 immediately after the power is switched on, the temperature prior to printing T2, and the ambient temperature of the thermal head each time the thermal head prints T3(i). If the temperature difference between the initial temperature T1 and the temperature prior to printing T2 is small, the duration of the current signals provided to the thermal head is controlled in accordance with the temperature prior to printing T2, which is the most recently measured thermal head ambient temperature best reflecting the printing device environmental temperature. If the difference is large, the duration is controlled in accordance with the initial temperature T1, which then best reflects the environmental temperature. If the rate of the increase in temperature during printing T3(i) is large, the duration is controlled in accordance with the initial temperature T2 to reduce the duration. If the temperature during printing T3(i) exceeds a temperature which indicates overheating, the printing operation is aborted. Thus, the present invention allows for controlling the thermal head drive by means of the measured thermal head ambient temperature excluding the effect of the heat generation of the thermal head and in accordance with the thermal state of the thermal head.
