    • An electronic typewriter includes: a carriage mounting a printing unit; a control unit for controlling the movement of the carriage; a first setting unit for setting a print start position at a preset position, a second setting unit for setting a decimal point tab position so as to align decimal point positions while printing; and a decision unit for deciding whether the control unit is to control the carriage on the basis of the decimal point position set by the second setting unit. The carriage is stopped at the decimal tab position if it is necessary, while the carriage is not stopped at the decimal tab position if it is not necessary. Thus, the operator can perform the tab operations without paying attention to the decimal tab position. Alternatively, instead of the decimal tab position, such control may apply to the tab position.

    • A control device for tabulation printing comprises a tabset register for defining each column of a printing sheet to be tabulation-printed; storing means adapted to store a printing position on the sheet in synchronism with the movement of a printing head and be operated in association with the tabset register; a tabset control register for storing a signal read out from the tabset register and defining a lower tabset position of any selected column of the printing data, and storing a signal representative of that position left-shifted from the stored position of the lower tabset signal to the extent equal to the number of digits or orders of the data where the highest orders or digits of the data are to be printed; a control means for controllably printing the highest digits or orders of the data on the corresponding position of the printing paper so that the lowest digits or orders of the data are printed in vertical alignment and on the side of the lowest tabset position.

    • The encoder scale has features to be automatically read by a single-channel sensor of the device to determine position of a carriage that is part of the device and moves bidirectionally across the sheet. These features include a first group of many graduations formed in a single row along the substrate; and a second group of many graduations also formed in the same row along the substrate and interspersed among those of the first group over at least a distance that corresponds approximately to the full transverse dimension of the sheet. The scale also includes some provision for automatically distinguishing --by the single-channel sensor of the image-related device--between graduations of the first and second groups. This provision includes, for each graduation of the second group, some feature (such as width) that is distinctive in relation to the graduations of the first group. The invention also provides the image-related device, with the carriage operating bidirectionally to print or read image details onto or from the sheet, and with the encoder scale incorporated as well as a single-sensor subsystem for detecting the individual graduations of both sets--and also including a single-channel subsystem that makes use of the two groups of graduations for two distinct purposes, respectively.

    • A system for handling multiple printer font requirements during playout of a plurality of sequentially stored text columns in a side-by-side format. A line from one column is printed on a print line, the carrier is caused to escape, and any corresponding line from a succeeding column is printed on the same line. Printing and escapement continue until all corresponding lines from each column are printed on the same print line prior to causing a printer carrier return. During playout within a column, or from column to column, printer font requirements stored with the text are used to determine subsequent system events. If one of the columns, or a portion thereof, is to be printed in a different type style or language, the system will signal a need for a font change, stop the playout and await an indication that a font change has been made.

    • An apparatus for arithmetically processing bill records wherein the printing device is provided with a first memory register having a digit-storing capacity corresponding to a maximum impression length specifically designed for said printing device and a tabset register which has the same digit-storing capacity as the first memory register and in which shifting is carried out in synchronization with that taking place in the first memory register. Tabset positions in the tabset register are determined by key operation so as to cause the digit-storing capacity of the first memory register in which shifting is carried out in synchronization with that occurring in the tabset register to be divided into desired sections corresponding to the widths of a plurality of columns appearing on different forms of bills, thereby enabling numerical values given in multiform bills to be recorded and to be arithmetically processed with ease and said printing device is further provided with a second memory register which has the same digit-storing capacity as the first memory register, in which shifting is carried out in synchronization with that taking place in said first memory register, and which is connected thereto through an adder so as to store vertical totals arrived at by adding up numerical values already stored in the first memory register belonging to the respective columns one line after another of impression on the bill.
