摘要： A variable cutoff cylinder alignment apparatus is provided. The variable cutoff cylinder alignment apparatus includes a plate cylinder support box for supporting an exchangeable variable cutoff plate cylinder, a blanket cylinder support box for supporting an exchangeable variable cutoff blanket cylinder and an alignment stop adapted to align the blanket cylinder support box and the plate cylinder support box. The plate cylinder support box supports an exchangeable plate cam and the blanket cylinder support box includes a blanket cam. The exchangeable plate cam is capable of contacting the stop and the exchangeable blanket cam is capable of contacting the plate support box to align the blanket cylinder support box and the plate cylinder support box. The plate cylinder support box and the blanket cylinder support box are capable of aligning cylinders of different sized cutoffs. A variable cutoff offset printing press and a method of aligning printing cylinders during a cutoff change are also provided.

摘要： A method of manufacturing a pattern on a substrate web includes providing a production tool having a surface relief structure of elevations and depressions. The elevations correspond to a desired pattern. A curable material is applied to the elevations. The material is brought into contact with a substrate web at a first location. The substrate web and surface relief structure are transported together in contact from the first location to a second location spaced from one another along the transport direction of the substrate web. The substrate web is separated from the surface relief structure at the second location whereupon the material forming the pattern is affixed to and carried by the substrate web. The material is cured by exposure to a curing energy source, either between the first and second locations and/or after the substrate web has been separated from the surface relief structure at the second location.

摘要： Systems and methods for aligning preprinted images on a roll of substrate to the moving components of a web press are disclosed. A method in accordance with one embodiment includes determining the speed of the moving components of the press, determining the speed of the web of preprinted images and adjusting the speed of the web of preprinted image to match the speed of the web. In particular embodiments, a press which produces rolls of preprinted material can be modified to change the equivalent cutoff length of the press. In further embodiments, a method of pasting new rolls of material to expiring rolls of material is accomplished by modulating the drive speed of the new roll of material to match the expiring roll of material while at the same time aligning the images on the new roll with the expiring roll.

摘要： A continuous web of material is unwound from a roll by driven pull rolls that feed the web material to a printing unit in a feedline of an envelope making machine. The printing unit prints a selected one of the inside surface and the outside surface of the web before the web is cut and folded to form envelopes. The printing unit is supported by a base which is mounted for pivotal movement on a platform of a fixed frame member. The base is connected to the platform by a vertical pivot pin for movement through a 180.degree. between a first position for printing the inside surface of the web and a second position for printing the outside surface of the web. The base of the printer is locked to the platform in the selected one of the first and second positions to perform the desired printing operation. The web is fed between counter-rotating impression and plate cylinders rotatably mounted and driven on the printer base. A film of ink is transferred by an anilox roll on the printer base to the plate cylinder which transfers the inked image to either the inside or outside surface of the web. To reverse the printing to the opposite surface of the web, the printer base is unlocked from the platform and pivoted about the pivot pin to move the plate cylinder to the opposite side of the web. The base is then locked to the platform, and the printing operation is resumed. With this arrangement, a single printing unit is used to print both surfaces of the web material.

The amount of feed of the printing sheet can be easily changed by circumferentially changing the position of the blanket cylinder with respect to the impression cylinder, without changing the circumferential position of the blanket cylinder relative to the plate cylinder. Similarly, the circumferential position of the plate cylinder relative to the blanket cylinder can also be changed to adjust the position of the printed image on the printing sheet in the direction of the length of the sheet.

摘要： An offset printing press is provided with a novel dual form planetary inker having improved printing characteristics. In use, a plate cylinder rotates to initially contact an ink/water form roller and subsequently contact a second form roller which is devoted exclusively to ink. The ink form roller is operable to insure that voids caused by lint, dust and other debris in the ink train are covered by the second form roller; additionally, the ink form roller provides a second working nip through which a second layer of ink is averaged with the previously deposited ink layer, such that ghosting is substantially eliminated. Both of the form rollers as well as numerous distributor rollers are rotatably carried by a shiftable frame which is pivotally interconnected with a support that carries the plate cylinder. The frame is shiftable from a first position wherein the forms are in rolling engagement with the plate cylinder and a second position wherein both of the forms are spaced from the plate cylinder; however, as the frame is lowered toward its first or working position, the ink/water form is disposed to contact the plate cylinder before the ink form, such that the plate is effectively dampened before ink is applied thereto. In particularly preferred forms, the planetary inker engages the plate cylinder on only two lines of contact, such that any one of a number of various plate cylinder diameters may be utilized.
