    • A doctor blade unit for the inking system of a rotary printing press consists of a doctor blade carrier, on which two doctor blades that can be brought into contact with an inking roller or screen roller are fastened parallel to one another in the approximate shape of a roof, with said doctor blades limiting an ink chamber in cooperation with the inking roller, the doctor blade carrier and sealing elements provided on the ends of said doctor blade carrier. Ducts for supplying and discharging ink into/out of the ink chamber and contacting units for pressing the doctor blade carrier against the inking roller are also provided. In order to ensure that both doctor blades can be pressed against the screen roller with exactly the same contact pressure, the doctor blade carrier is connected to a doctor blade unit carrier that is provided with the coupling rods of parallel pitman systems. The parallel pitmans are coupled to inking system flames or supports of the inking system flames.

    • A non-tilt cheek assembly is provided for use in an ink fountain assembly. An ink fountain mechanism for adjustably metering the thickness of the layer of ink in a plurality of zones axially across a fountain roller for a printing press. The ink fountain mechanism includes a plurality of metering blocks, horizontally aligned and axially adjacent to one another with side-by-side upper support surfaces forming a substantially continuous support surface along the length of the fountain roller. Each upper surface of the metering blocks is adjustably spaced from the fountain roller to control the amount of ink, in a zone corresponding to the side-to-side length of the support surface of each metering block. A plurality of adjustment bolts are each separately and threadably engaged with each of the plurality of metering blocks. The adjustment bolts are slideably supported in a main beam that extends the length of the fountain roller. A plurality of lever-actuated cams are pivotably held adjacent to the heads of each of the adjustment bolts. Metering cams are engaged with the heads of the adjustment bolts and are progressively actuatable between a minimum position, providing a minimum ink metered thickness, and a maximum position, providing a maximum metered ink thickness. A replaceable liner is provided and a pivot mount having an operating position with the replaceable liner immediately adjacent to the fountain roller and a liner replacement position with the liner pivoted away from the fountain roller so that it can be conveniently removed.

    • A pair of doctor blade assemblies extend from upper and lower ends of a housing. Seal assemblies having compressible seals, seal spacers and retaining plates are disposed at opposite ends of the housing and extend between the upper and lower doctor blade assemblies. The doctor blade assemblies, the seal assemblies, the inner surface of the housing and the outer surface of the transfer roll define a fully encapsulated applicator chamber. The upper blade assembly includes a doctor blade positioned as a trailing edge blade, a blade support for clamping the blade and for securing the blade to the housing, a blade seal positioned for sealing the ink chamber and a pneumatic assembly for adjusting the pressure of the trailing doctor blade against the transfer roll. The lower blade assembly includes a doctor blade positioned as a trailing edge blade and a blade support for clamping the blade and for securing the blade to the lower end of the housing. The angle of inclusion formed between the doctor blades is at least about 150 degrees. The plates, seals and spacers of the seal assemblies have arcuate front edges which follow along and abut ends of the transfer roll. An adjustable slide mechanism moves the housing, the blade assemblies and the end seal assemblies into and out of contact with the transfer roll. Pneumatic cylinders connected to the upper blade assembly apply precise wiping pressure. Knobs allow turning connecting screws for minor positioning adjustments.

    • The invention provides a method for arranging the inking for a pressrun in a rotary printing machine. The rotary printing machine has an inking mechanism and a dampening mechanism. The ink quantity transmitted by an ink ductor is adjusted by zone via ink zone ductor blades. When the dampening mechanism is switched off, the run-up curve of the inking mechanism is initially adjusted at an average surface coverage over the entire surface, so that a constant ink density corresponding to the average surface coverage results on the printing stock for all printing speeds. The run-up curve of the dampening mechanism is adjusted subsequently, wherein the ink zone ductor blades are in different positions which correspond to various surface coverage values of a printing subject customarily printed by the printing machine. The adjustment is effected in such a way that the ink zones with average surface coverage deliver a constant ink density to the printing stock for all printing speeds. The surface coverage in ink zones not having the average surface coverage is measured at different printing speeds. A measurement for the readjustment of the ink zone measuring devices is obtained from the deviation of the measured surface coverage from the reference surface coverage. For each of the surface coverage values, characteristics lines are obtained for the readjustment of the ink zone measuring devices which is dependent on the printing speed.

The apparatus may include a side plate, a roller disposed adjacent a first end of the plate, a back plate disposed adjacent a second opposing end of the side plate and a throttle disposed between the roller and the back plate. The throttle is mounted to the side plate and includes a back surface facing towards the back plate and a front surface facing towards the roller. The front surface includes a curved portion forming a tapering gap between the roller and the front surface of the throttle. A position controller is coupled to the throttle to selectively move the curved portion towards and away from the roller to adjust the volume of ink being transferred to the outer surface of the roller.
