    • A method of manufacturing a monolithic composite wing without using mechanical fasteners is described. The process begins with the formation of a center wing box in combination with a pair of spars, riblets and a pair of skin-molds including the wrapping and binding of the box by means of resin impregnated composite tapes. Next, additional cells are adjoined contiguously on either side of the current framework and an overlap wrapping and bonding process is continued around the current framework. The overlap wrapping and binding procedure provides increased torsion stiffness and reduced structural weight. All cells up to the leading and trailing edges will be included in the assembly process. Conduits to convey fuel, hydraulic fluid and electrical wiring will also be installed in designated cells. Finally, the completed wing will be cured in an autoclave under uniform pressure and temperature.

    • A web of air-permeable uniting band material for use in a filter tipping machine is advanced lengthwise by a first pair of driven rollers and a second pair of driven rollers, first through a magazine which is located between the two pairs of rollers, thereupon around a roller-shaped flanged adjustable braking device which is located upstream of the second pair of rollers, and around an adjustable curling device between the braking device and the second pair of rollers. The braking action is regulated for the purpose of subjecting the running web to a predictable curling action. This enhances the quality of filter cigarettes wherein the tobacco-containing and the filter material-containing parts are connected to each other by adhesive-coated uniting bands constituting sections of the thus treated web.

    • A cigarette filter rod system comprises a plug combiner machine having a knife located downstream from a sensor. The knife generates a trigger signal which prompts an Inspection Unit to locate a previously stored frame of sensor data corresponding the rod which was cut by the knife. The Inspection Unit applies thresholds to the frame of sensor data to determine the location of filter segment boundaries, and then determines whether air rings are present in the data. The Inspection Unit then compares measurements made on the frame of sensor data with a pre-stored recipe indicating expected values for the frame. Statistical data is sent to a Human-Machine Interface Unit for analysis and display. The system performs filter rod rejection and cut registration based on the analysis performed by the Inspection Unit and the Human-Machine Interface.

    • The invention describes an improved process for the sealing of alternating flutes of ‘honeycomb’ designed filters to be made after construction, or fabrication, of the basic filter structure, rather than during construction, as is shown in the prior art. The method seals both sides of the primary flutes as is typically done for one side in the prior art and then the media is rolled into a honeycomb shape so that secondary flutes, open on both sides of the roll are created. The roll is vertically orientated and then the lower end is immersed into a sealing compound to such a depth which will cause the sealing compound to travel up into the lower portion of the roll to a height above the height of the lower seal for the primary flutes. The sealing compound is allowed to cure, effectively sealing the secondary flutes. The roll is then cut along a line located above the height of the lower seal for the primary flutes and before the top surface of the sealing compound in the secondary flutes. When cut, a fully functional cylindrical honeycomb filter structure is formed having, on one side primary flutes sealed and secondary flutes open, and on the other side primary flutes open and secondary flutes sealed. In another embodiment, successive layers of filter media are aligned in parallel to form a rectangular, or panel, shaped filter, whose, flutes are sealed in a similar manner.
