    • Contour peeled and precored pineapple halves are continuously advanced, cut face down, along a planar support having a rib which guides the halves by their precore recesses. The halves are then passed over a rotary loop knife projecting up through the support which removes the remainder of the core material and the recored halves are then guided by a larger rib fitted into the recore recesses. The guided halves then pass beneath radial segmenting knives which are backed up by downstream radial guide plates and the segmented halves are projected past the end of the support into the path of a rotary chunking knife. The rotary chunking knife has an offset gauge plate for receiving the fruit ends and a spiral edged slicing knife parallel to the gauge plate adjacent the end of the support, with the gauge plate terminating circumferentially while the knife is still slicing and with the knife terminating circumferentially at the off-set pineapple receiving portion of the gauge plate.

    • Nonuniform articles, such as potatoes, are cut into uniform pieces by subjecting the articles to a centrifugal force for orienting each article along its longitudinal axis, transferring tangentially each oriented article to a conveyor defining a conveying path for forming a single row of articles moving in a conveying direction and oriented with their longitudinal axes parallel to the conveying path, feeding the single row of articles past a plurality of measuring stations, measuring a longitudinal length for each article passing a measuring station, removing from the conveyor each article having a longitudinal length greater than a length predetermined for the respective measuring station, and cutting each article into uniform pieces. Apparatus for performing the method has a cylindrical wall defining an opening for the transfer of the articles to the conveyor and a cone-shaped disc mounted for rotation and arranged within the cylindrical wall for supplying the centrifugal force. A plurality of sensing devices is used to measure the length of the passing articles, and a plurality of associated plungers is provided to remove the articles from the conveyor and move the articles into a cutting assembly. The sensing devices are arranged in the conveying direction to remove articles having progressively shorter longitudinal lengths.

    • The cutter comprises a cutter body having an upper support surface formed with an elongated rectangular opening with inwardly extending rails on the opposite longer sides of the opening and on one end of the opening. An open rectangular support frame is engageable with the rails and has a length less than that of the opening, for reciprocation along the rails, and coil springs, engaged in recesses in one end of the rectangular opening bias the support frame to engage the other end of the opening. An open rectangular blade frame is removably and conformingly seated in the opening of the support frame, and has a plurality of cutting blades extending longitudinally across the opening therein in equispaced substantially parallel relation. A pressing cover is hinged at one end to the cutter body and has a free end provided with an operating handle, and the pressing cover has projections on its inner surface engageable through the spaces between the cutting blades. The end of the support frame opposite that engaged by the coil springs is formed with downwardly and outwardly tapered grooves, and the cover, adjacent its free end, is provided with wedges engageable in the groove. When a vegetable or fruit to be cut is placed on the blades and the cover is pressed down, the article to be cut is cut due to the pressure exerted by the pressing cover and, at the same time, the engagement of the wedges with the tapered grooves forces the support frame to move longitudinally of the opening in the support surface against the bias of the coil springs, so that the blades exert a moving cutting action on the article to be cut at the same time as the projections on the inner surface of the cover force the article between the blades. A second open rectangular blade frame is provided with cutting blades extending transversely across its opening in equispaced substantially parallel relation. For cutting a vegetable or the like into square pieces, the two blade frames may be superposed on each other and mounted in the support frame. In this case, the cover does not have the wedges, so that cutting into squares is effected by downward pressure exerted by the pressing cover without any movement of the support frame and the blade frames. The projections on the inner surface of the cover are preferably square so as to be engageable in the square recesses defined by the two sets of blades.

    • A slicer for tube gels or strips from a slab gel which includes a cutting plate having a plurality of blades in spaced parallel relation extending between the sides of the cutting plate. The spaces between the blades are configured with a cutting edge on one side thereof. The plate is mounted in a holder which is driven by a rotating cam mounted on a drive motor shaft which contacts a cam follower on an arm attached to the cutting plate holder. A pedestal is provided for supporting the gel slab strip or tube gel. The gel is retained laterally on the pedestal by means of retaining vanes on each side of the pedestal. The retaining vanes are urged by springs to extend above the surface of the pedestal. The cutting plate holder is rotatably attached to a framework for mounting the drive motor and the support pedestal so that it may be alternately positioned overlying the pedestal and in a remote position. A weight is attached to the cutting plate holder which is radially adjustable about the axis of rotation of the cutting plate holder. Adjustment of the radius of the weight from the axis of rotation allows adjustment of the force applied to the cutting plate holder for urging the cutting plate toward the pedestal. A gel to be sliced is placed on the pedestal, the cutting plate is positioned to overlie the gel with the cutting edges of the plurality of blades in contact with the gel, and the motor is actuated causing reciprocating motion of the cutting blades. The cutting blades advance through the gel depressing the springs supporting the retaining vanes, thereby pushing the retaining vanes ahead of the cutting blades until the cutting blades pass through the gel and contact the surface of the pedestal.

    • A meat slicing machine includes a supporting framework, a hopper attached to the framework, and a rotatable drum in the bottom of the hopper. A set of parallel, longitudinally reciprocating blades having upwardly facing cutting edges are disposed below the drum. Several series of longitudinally spaced apart fingers project outwardly from the drum surface. A piece of meat disposed in the hopper is forced against the fingers with the aid of a pressure plate in the hopper. The fingers stab the meat, and the drum rotates the meat progressively into contact with the reciprocating knife blades to slice the meat into several cuts. Meat can be continuously fed into the hopper and sliced, and an endless conveyor belt below the blades continuously discharges the cuts from the machine to a suitable receptacle.

    • An endless wire is wound a plurality of times around a pair of spaced parallel drums and two pulleys whose axes are inclined to the axes of the drums. Each drum has in its periphery a plurality of axially spaced grooves for guiding the upper reaches of the wire in closely spaced relation. A third rotary, grooved drum is disposed above the upper reaches of the wire and in operative relation thereto. The mushrooms, which are to be sliced, are fed, their stems parallel to the upper reaches of the wire, into the nip between said upper reaches, and the third drum. The third drum forces an advancing mushroom downwardly through the upper wire reaches slicing mushrooms simultaneously into a plurality of slices of uniform thickness.
