    • A foundry casting machine comprising an endless conveyor supported on a frame within an overall casing for movement in a vertical plane through a sinuous path, the casing having a first opening therein so that trays supported by the conveyor, as they move past said first opening can have moulds assembled thereon, a second opening in the casing at a pouring station to enable molten metal to be poured into the moulds and a third opening in the casing through which the contents of the trays may be removed, air extraction means for withdrawing undesirable gases and air-borne particles from the interior of the casing and means to hold together the parts of the mould prior to the pouring of the molten metal, said means comprising either one or more weights which are automatically placed upon the moulds prior to a pouring operation and are removed from the moulds subsequent to the pouring operation or clamping devices supported on the trays, the clamping devices being suitable either for clamping together mould parts which are split horizontally or for clamping together mould parts which are split vertically. The machine is specifically designed for handling green sand moulds.

    • An apparatus and method for casting metal strip includes a moveable chill body having a quench surface thereon. A nozzle mechanism deposits a stream of molten metal onto a quenching region of the quench surface to form the strip, and a gas supply mechanism provides an initial gas mixture, which consists essentially of carbon monoxide and oxygen. An ignition mechanism ignites the initial gas mixture to create an exothermic reaction which provides a low density, reducing flame atmosphere at a depletion region located substantially adjacent to and upstream from the quenching region. A control mechanism controls the initial gas mixture to produce an adjusted reducing flame atmosphere at the depletion region in which the adjusted reducing flame has a burnt gas composition that includes substantially no free oxygen.

Nozzle end formations (87) define reservoirs (88) to receive separate supply streams of molten metal and flow passages (95) to direct metal from the reservoirs across pool confining end closures of the caster. Each reservoir (88) is separated from trough (61) by an upstanding wall (70) which functions as a weir for metal in the reservoir such that metal can flow over it into the trough when the reservoir is full.
