    • A method of adding gasses to, and removing gasses from a molten metal is disclosed. A molten metal is passed from a metal making furnace and cascaded through a gas or a flame. The flame is generated by a combustion burner and has an inner core of a first gas and an outer core of a second gas which jackets the first gas. As the metal is cascaded through the flame or gas, the first gas is passed into the molten metal. In the alternative, the cascade of molten metal may be passed through the first gas, or the first gas may be mixed with molten metal. The first gas may be used to sparge, react with, degassify, or otherwise dissolve within the molten metal. The device of the invention comprises a vessel for receiving the molten metal, a transfer trough extending from the furnace toward the vessel, and a combustion burner positioned with respect to the transfer trough and the vessel. The combustion burner is adapted to emit a flame or gas flow therefrom, and the transfer trough is adapted to pass the molten metal into the flame or gas flow, or to permit the flame or gas flow to pass through the molten metal as the metal enters the vessel. The device also includes a combustion burner constructed and arranged to cascade the molten metal as it is passed over a stair-step burner face provided as a part of the burner.

    • A heat shield for a casting furnace (e.g., a directional solidification or single crystal casting furnace) includes a plurality of heat insulating plates (e.g., 6 plates), each with a leading edge. The plurality of heat insulating plates are arranged, for example, in an overlapping layout, such that at least a portion of their leading edges define a discharge opening (e.g., a hexagonal discharge opening in the case of a heat shield with 6 heat insulating plates) circumscribed by the heat insulating plates. The heat insulating plates are moveable in a manner that adjusts (i.e., increases or decreases) the size of the discharge opening. The heat shield also includes a rotatable disk operatively coupled to the heat insulating plates such that when the rotatable disk is rotated in one direction, the heat insulating plates are moved in a manner which decreases the size of the discharge opening. Furthermore, when the rotatable disk is rotated in another direction, the heat insulating plates are moved in a manner which increases the size of the discharge opening.

    • A tumbling unit such as a casting shake-out unit, rotary media drum, sand reclaimer or the like, is provided. The tumbling unit includes a cylindrical outer shell and a cylindrical inner shell. The inner liner is formed of a series of interfitting segments. The segments each have an inner surface, an outer surface, side edges, a front edge, a back edge, and a vane extending from the outer surface. The side edges of the segments have a groove formed therein which extends the length of said the edges. The grooves of neighboring segments define channel between the segments. A pin or liner lock key is received in the channel to urge the neighboring segments apart to form a tight interfit among the segments in a row of the liner. The retaining pin has a body having side surfaces, a top surface, and a bottom surface. A hole extends through the pin body and receives a dowel, which is sized to extend from opposite sides of said pin body. The dowel is shaped and sized to be received in the grooves of the neighboring segments. An arm extends upwardly from the pin body top surface. The pin arm conforms in shape and size to the side profile of the vane, and is positioned on the pin body to be in alignment with the vane of the adjacent segments, to form a continuous vane on the outer surface of the liner. In another embodiment of the liner segments, the segments are secured to each other and to the outer cylinder of the tumbler.

    • The invention has an object to permit to make the accumulation amount and the temperature of molten metal in the metal material molding machine constant, by performing material supply and melting taking the accumulation amount as reference during the molding operation. The supply apparatus 11 and the agitation means 29 of metal material at the moment of operation starting are controlled to be inactive until the temperature of the melting vessel attains a predetermined value and to start operating when the predetermined temperature is attained, allowing to supply and agitate the metal material. The supply and the agitation of metal material after the predetermined temperature is attained, are performed while gradually supplying and agitating the metal material until metal material of at least 6 times or more of the maximum injection volume is accumulated in melt state. The supply of metal material during the molding operation starts after the weighing completion to supply metal material for one shot of mold before starting the following weighing and then stops. This is performed by controlling the speed and the time of the supply apparatus for maintaining the accumulation amount and temperature of molten metal 34 in the melting cylinder 8 constant all the times.
