    • A method and apparatus for the descaling of metal surfaces without the use of caustic substances is provided. The apparatus includes a first and second blast heads containing fan shaped nozzles that spray high velocity jets of smooth edged, ceramic media at a scale covered continuous sheet of steel. The continuous sheet of steel is advanced into an abrading station containing a pair of brush assemblies that include stainless steel bristled brushes. The stainless steel brushes engage the surface of the sheet of steel and abrade away the cracked scale, leaving a surface clean of scale. The surface produced is pH neutral and therefore resists additional corrosion and does not require oil coatings, or other protective treatments. The metal surface is produced with a roughness that is less than 2.5 microns Ra without stretching, polishing, cold-rolling or the use of acid pickling. Eliminating these steps makes for a faster, more robust process and saves considerable cost.

    • The present invention provides a wire feed device for guiding and straightening a wire which is comprised of a wire infeed unit and a self-cleaning deflection head which are connected together by a flexible guide hose. The wire infeed unit has a guide passage therethrough whose inlet and outlet are offset so the wire will remain in contact with a contact element within the passage to generate a signal when the wire is in the passage. The deflection head has a guide arc-shaped guide passage therethrough which, in turn, have outwardly radiating pockets spaced along the outer side thereof which remove debris (e.g. the material abraded from the wire and wire shavings) transport it out of the deflection head. Dimpled guide points are formed on the other side of the arc-shaped guide passage opposite the pockets to facilitate the self-cleaning of the wire. A wire straightening sleeve is positioned downstream of the deflection head, which can generate a control/monitoring signal is positioned downstream of the head.

    • A descaler is provided for descaling the scale on hot finished wire or green rod. The descaler comprises two rollers that are mounted to a rotatable support plate. The support plate and the rollers rotate in unison. One of the rollers pivots relative to the support plate such that the rollers can be positioned substantially parallel to allow wire to be easily fed between the rollers for set up purposes and can be positioned substantially perpendicular in which the rollers are arranged to effect wire descaling when wire is pulled through the descaler. Rotation of the roller support plate from the initial set up position automatically pivots the one roller into the working position. The pivoting movement of the one roller is accomplished using the tension of the wire that is created as the roller support plate is rotated and/or a cam mechanism.

    • A new configuration and operating method therefore improves conventional continuous pickling and cold-rolling systems in response to increasing demands for high-propertied steel plates. The continuous pickling and cold-rolling equipment system comprises a uncoiling apparatus, a joining apparatus, an accumulating looper, a cleaning section, a pickling section, a cold rolling mill, a cutting apparatus, and a coiling apparatus. This configuration and associated operation method realize a rolling line having a substantially infinite number of mill stands enabling continuous or endless cold rolling without additional mill stands. Thereby, production of cold rolled steel strip with a large total reduction ratio for high-grade steel strips effectively using a small number of mill stands becomes practicable. At least one of the embodiments clearly shows acceptable productivity that can stand comparison with a typical conventional cold rolling system.
