    • A clutch mechanism having an easy-to-manufacture and inexpensive constitution, by making use of frictional engaging force in thrust direction, in a coat film transfer tool of automatic winding type. At least at the feed reel side, a clutch mechanism is provided between a driven member of a tape winding portion and a drive side rotary gear for rotating and driving it, and its power transmission makes use of the frictional engaging force in thrust direction between the driven member and drive side rotary gear. This frictional engaging force can be set by properly adjusting the dimensional relation in thrust direction between the mutual constituent members, and therefore the designing and manufacturing conditions of the constituent members are less strict, manufacture is easy, assembling is easy, and hence the manufacturing cost and device cost can be lowered.

    • An apparatus for coating sheet metal strip substrate with lubricant type laminate includes top and bottom roller coaters for pinching the metal therebetween. Each roller coater includes an applicator roll supported between three contact points provided by two support rolls and the sheet metal surface itself. As such the applicator roll can be without and axle and freely removable. The applicator roll is driven by the movement of the metal strip. The roller coaters are movable between engaged and disengaged positions. When in the disengaged position, support brackets on the top roller coater prevent the applicator roll from dropping and replace the bottom support of the sheet metal. Pneumatic cylinders for actuating the top and bottom roller coaters are operatively connected such that the top and bottom roller coaters can “float” or move vertically while at the same time pinching the metal strip therebetween. One of the support rolls also acts as a lubricant transfer roll to transfer lubricant from a plurality of dispensing heads to the applicator roll. The dispensing heads include a cylindrically shaped recess surface receiving the transfer roll and a longitudinal outlet slot thereon for supplying lubricant to the transfer roll. The cylindrically shaped recess surface is spring loaded against the transfer roll. A manifold connects the dispensing heads to a electrically actuated solenoid valve. An electronic controller selectively modulates the solenoid valve to set an application rate for lubricant.

    • An applicator for applying an adhesive to a spine or adjoining regions of a book block conveyed guided past the applicator along a conveying plane in a conveying direction includes a trough for holding the adhesive. At least one applicator roller protrudes into the trough and is arranged for transferring adhesive onto the spine of the book block for forming an adhesive layer on the spine. The roller is driven in a direction which is the same as the conveying direction and defines an approach region in which the surface of the roller approaches the conveying plane. A sharply-pointed separating wedge is disposed downstream of the approach region of the applicator roller and forms a separating region for the supplied adhesive between the applicator roller and the conveying plane of the book block.

    • A lane maintenance machine having wicks that absorb dressing from a reservoir and transfer it to the applicator of the machine has a gravity-fed dressing supply system that maintains the dressing at a substantially constant level within the wick reservoir. A small pilot chamber upstream from the reservoir and in open communication therewith at the same elevation as the reservoir has its fluid level directly controlled by a float sensor to in turn indirectly control the level within the wick reservoir. The float sensor within the pilot chamber provides a signal to a controller when the level within the pilot chamber drops below a predetermined point so that a control valve between the pilot chamber and the main supply tank opens to allow a makeup volume of dressing to flow by gravity from the main tank into the pilot chamber. Vent conduits associated with the main tank and the pilot chamber also serve as a means for accepting dressing that drains from the reservoir when the machine is upended into a transport position, thus preventing spillage of dressing through the open top of the wick reservoir.
