    • An improved method and apparatus for producing an extremely fine micron and sub-micron size water mist using an electronic ultrasonic device that produces the mist at ambient-pressure and delivering the mist for application in suppressing fire. A piezoelectric transducer is arranged to produce a water mist having at least a portion of sub-micron size droplets. The water mist is produced by high frequency pressure waves or ultrasonic waves of predetermined or variable frequency, including frequencies which may exceed 2.5 MHz. The water mist is directed to a firebase to be self-entrained by the fire's flame. The momentum provided the water mist in directing the mist is minimized to enhance the ability of the fire to entrain the mist, and the flow of the carrier medium is usually directed tangentially about the water fountain creating the mist. Further, the throughput and concentration of the mist is controlled to ensure that the entrained mist will be sufficient to cool and suppress the fire. The water mist may be effectively utilized for mitigating blast and reducing over pressures. The fine water mist may also be utilized for humidification because of its fast vaporization and efficient cooling behavior. The apparatus may be modified in its physical design and direction of output, and the method may be modified by adjusting the throughput of mist, composition of mist, concentration of mist, and momentum of mist, whereby fire may be suppressed under many different scenarios.

    • A biodegradable, non-toxic firefighting concentrate composition. The preferred compositions include a mixture of a C14-C18 5 mole ethoxylated tallow amine, 2 mole ethoxylated coconut amine, and 5 mole ethoxylated coconut amine, wherein the blend is neutralized with a C6 carboxylic acid; an aliquot of 33 parts is added to 3 parts of a 2 mole ethoxylated linear alcohol having 6 to 16 carbon atoms, and enough water to bring the total weight percentage to 70%. Ten to fifteen parts of sodium lauryl sulfate is added and the balance of water is added to bring the total up to 100%. The composition is also effective when mixed with glycol dimethyl ether, the incorporation of a filming protein based agent, dye, or foam forming materials. In addition, the composition is useful with soil bacteria for remediating soil contaminated with hydrocarbon fuel and for facilitating fuel dispersion and degradation within bacterial-action sewage systems.

    • A fire access port is mounted on a flammable material compartment juxtaposed with an access hole. A fire extinguisher nozzle is inserted through the fire port to suppress a fire from outside the compartment. The fire port comprises a diaphragm of flexible, resilient material having a predetermined thickness extending between opposite primary and secondary surfaces. First and second transverse grooves extend across the diaphragm primary surface. The grooves have a maximum depth less than the diaphragm thickness, and a floor at the maximum depth, forming first and second frangible webs between each groove floor and the secondary surface. The frangible webs will rupture as the fire extinguisher nozzle is inserted through the diaphragm.

    • This invention is a means to quell uncontrolled fires, dissipate low-pressure cells in tornado-producing clouds and make ordinance as mines, old bombs and the like inert and provide a design opportunity for lava flows. For each operation, one applies unique means of distribution of Liquid Nitrogen, either above the surface sufficiently to allow it to rain down from holes in a trough forming a pattern in the bottom of an encircling or linear trough held up with stakes or legs of a length optimum for maximum evaporation before hitting the surface, or underground with drilling means or preparatory piping or well placed air drops of Liquid Nitrogen. This produces local cooling and expansion of inert gas supplanting the general atmosphere with a nitrogen atmosphere reducing significantly the amount of oxygen available and increasing the atmospheric pressure. Both cooling and flooding with inert gas quickly quell of fires. The expansion of gas sprayed in tornado-producing clouds raises the atmospheric pressure. Cooling renders inert fused ordinance as mines and bombs. They cannot explode or detonate at these extremely low temperatures. Liquid Nitrogen can control both lava flows and flooding making the flowing liquid a solid by lowering its temperature.

    • A combination of a flame arrestor with a reflection suppressor is provided which not only arrests an advancing flame front, but also suppresses or mitigates a reflection wave that is generated by a pressure wave that passes through the combination and continues on to a pipe restriction what generates a reflection wave that proceeds back to the combination. At the combination, the reflection suppressor suppresses and/or mitigates the reflection wave, thereby avoiding a heightened pressure in the combination that could cause a re-ignition and a new flame front and pressure front. The reflection suppressor has a tapered profile that permits a pressure wave to pass along and past the reflection suppressor as it leaves the combination but that impedes and mitigates a returning reflection wave produced by the pressure wave striking a pipe restriction and causing such a returning reflection wave.
