    • A reduction-based orthopedic system facilitates the installation of a properly oriented prosthetic component of the type having an articulating surface adapted to co-act in a joint. A trialing component attachable to an anchoring unit includes an articulating surface corresponding to that of the prosthetic component, enabling a desired orientation to be established through a trial reduction. A cutting guide is provided which is physically indexed to the trialing component and the prosthesis, such that when the bone is modified using the guide, the prosthetic component automatically assumes the desired orientation. The apparatus invention may further include apparatus for locking the trialing component into place upon establishing the desired orientation, with the anchoring unit being rigidly coupleable to the anchoring unit bone through attachment to the trialing component in locked position. In an alternative configuration, the bone-cutting guide is coupleable to the anchoring unit through direct attachment.

    • The present invention is directed to a radiolucent aiming guide for locating and drilling through the holes in the distal end of an implanted intramedullary nail. The aiming guide comprises an elongate handle constructed substantially of a radiolucent material, which does not cast a strong image on a monitor when exposed to radiation. The radiolucent handle is used in conjunction with a protection sleeve, trocar, drill sleeve, and drill bit, which are used to locate and drill through the hole in the nail. Radiopaque components in the distal end of the protection sleeve, trocar, and drill bit are used to align the drill over the nail hole. A pair of radiopaque pins, located within the handle and lying parallel to its longitudinal axis, aid in ensuring the proper rotational alignment of the aiming guide over the nail hole. The aiming guide may also include a structure to facilitate its alignment over a second hole in the distal end of the intramedullary nail.

    • Surgical techniques and instruments are provided for performing laparoscopic surgical procedures. The apparatus includes a sleeve having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending between the proximal and distal ends. The lumen opens at the proximal end and receives an elongated member, such as a cannula or surgical instrument, therethrough. The sleeve is resilient material and conformable to the outer shape of at least a distal portion of the elongate member. In one form the distal end wall includes means for opening the end wall to allow the elongate member to advance therethrough. The sleeve may also be provided with internal ribs and a flange member. Various techniques using various surgical instruments in laparoscopic procedures are also disclosed.

    • A surgical drill guide for directing a guide tube toward a target. The guide tube has first and second sets of teeth extending along an exterior surface thereof. A through passage in an operating mechanism housing receives the guide tube. A first actuator or guide tube advancing mechanism uses a ratchet and pawl mechanism to advance the guide tube distally. A guide tube locking mechanism, that includes another ratchet and pawl mechanism prevents any unwanted proximal motion by providing a releasable lock against any unwanted proximal motion of the guide tube during use.

    • A femoral guide is shown in the form of a femoral sizing guide for determining the size of a femoral knee prosthesis to be implanted at an implant site at a distal femur and includes a femoral sizing block connected to a foot component for selective pivotal movement about a pivotal axis extending in a generally axial direction and essentially intersecting the transepicondylar axis of the distal femur to enable a guide arrangement on the femoral sizing block to be located for facilitating subsequent placement of a femoral cutting guide on a distal femur in position to rotationally locate an anterior cut in a plane anterior of and essentially parallel to the transepicondylar axis of the distal femur. The femoral sizing block is connected to the foot component for selective linear movement to compensate for size variations outside standard femoral knee prosthesis sizes. Visible indications are provided of the location of a subsequently implanted femoral knee prosthesis. A corresponding method determines the appropriate location and position of the femoral knee prosthesis to be implanted at the implant site, and the size of the femoral knee prosthesis.
