    • A bone marrow sampling device is provided, including an outer cannula having a sidewall with a plurality of openings and a distal tissue penetrating tip. An inner cannula is positioned within the outer cannula, and includes a sidewall with at least one opening. Selective relative movement of the inner cannula and the outer cannula enables the device to be configured in multiple bone marrow sampling modes in which the at least one opening in the sidewall of the inner cannula is aligned with different openings in the sidewall of the outer cannula such that bone marrow can be drawn into the inner lumen of the inner cannula from different radial and longitudinal positions external to the sidewall of the outer cannula without the need to reposition the outer cannula.

    • Soft tissue biopsy apparatus for obtaining a tissue specimen comprises a compact handle functioning as a housing having an opening at a front end thereof through which a tubular cannula is arranged to pass. Disposed in the lumen of the cannula is a stylet having a notch formed near its distal end in which a tissue sample is to be captured. First and second springs are operatively coupled individually to the cannula and stylet and a cocking slide incorporating a force reducing mechanism is used to compress the springs while establishing the size of the specimen to be collected in the notch. A trigger mounted on the cocking slide can be used to release the compressed springs in close succession to first advance the end of the stylet beyond the end of the cannula whereby tissue to be extracted flows into the notch and then the spring driving the cannula is released forcing the cannula forward and severing the piece of tissue contained in the notch from surrounding tissue.

    • A dual action biopsy needle scrapes tissue of cellular thickness from a lesion during forward and rearward reciprocations of the needle along its longitudinal axis of symmetry. A first sharp edge, formed by a beveled distal end of the needle, scrapes tissue during proximal-to-distal travel of the needle. A second sharp edge is provided by a transversely disposed slot formed in the needle near the first sharp edge. The second sharp edge scrapes tissue during distal-to-proximal travel of the needle. In a first embodiment, the second sharp edge is coincident with an exterior surface of the needle. In a second embodiment, the second sharp edge is elevated with respect to the exterior surface and in a third embodiment the second sharp edge is recessed. Additional embodiments include a second slot, a channel, and a hinge for enabling pivotal movement of the second and third sharp edges.
