The apparatus may be single- or multi-lane. The cutter blades may be formed as lobes (23) which retain the excised cores in the closed-together condition pending ejection at the discharge position.

    • A fruit pitting apparatus including at least one of a box cam assembly for driving pitting knives relative to holders containing fruit, an active separating assembly which improves the efficiency of separation of the pitted fruit flesh from the holders after pitting, and a wiping blade positioned to wipe pits from the holders after pitting. The holders can be driven continuously during the pitting operation, or they can be driven intermittently so as to be stationary during pitting and to translate before and after pitting. The separating assembly preferably includes actively driven cam tracks within the knife driving assembly which vary the force with which the holders grip the fruit during and after pitting, especially when the holders are driven intermittently. The box cam assembly includes a box cam, a drive assembly for rotating the box cam, a pivot unit which undergoes reciprocating pivoting motion in response to the rotating box cam, a set of one or more shafts (to which pitting knives can be mounted) which reciprocate longitudinally in response to the reciprocating pivoting motion of the pivot unit, and preferably also a subassembly for causing the shafts to undergo reciprocating motion in directions perpendicular to their longitudinal axes.

    • A food wedger for slicing food such as apples into wedge shaped segments and coring the food comprises a frame having a base that supports a cutter assembly. The cutter assembly comprises a plurality of cutter blades radiating outwardly and upwardly from a central ring in an inverted cone-shaped radial array. The blades are fixed to the central ring and, are fixed at the periphery of the assembly to a peripheral support ring. A tapered segmented pusher having radial slots and a central pin is mounted for selective advancement through the cutter assembly. When so advanced, the blades of the assembly pass through the slots and the central pin of the pusher passes through the central ring of the cutter assembly. Food to be wedged is placed in the cutter assembly and the pusher is advanced through the cutter to force the food past the blades, which cuts the periphery of the food into wedge-shaped segments. The core of the food is, at the same time, cut away by the central ring. The food wedges are pressed completely through the cutter assembly by the pusher and the core of the food is pressed completely through the central support ring by the central pin of the pusher, thus clearing the wedger completely in preparation for successive cuts.

    • A high capacity device for reliably sorting pieces of fruit from a bulk supply into individual cups for processing. The fruit is received in bulk in a hopper, a side of which is open to a center hub of a connected pair of feed wheels revolving coaxially in spaced horizontal relation. Each feed wheel carries a plurality of radially-extending through passages about its periphery. Each passage carries at least two individual pieces of said fruit simultaneously. An outward, exit end of each passage is normally blocked by cammable gate fingers. The feed wheels are rotatably synchronized with a pair of chains engaged with sprockets attached to the feed wheels and carrying therebetween a conveyor carrying the fruit cups. The speed of revolution of the feed wheels is sufficient to keep an outermost one of the fruit pieces lodged adjacent the gate fingers. Fixed camming surfaces open the gate fingers of each feed passage at a tangential engagement point between the wheel sprockets and the drive chain of the conveyor, thereby to place the outermost fruit from each passage gently into the receiving cup.
