摘要： An inexpensive ergonomically sound hand-held device for removing a fish hook from a fish's lip, jaw, mouth or throat without removing the fish from the water or handling it in any way is disclosed. To remove a hook, the leader or line is pulled through a zero-width slit in the polymeric distal end. The slit expands during this process and then contracts, preventing the line or leader from exiting the device. There is no damage to the dressing of flies size 28 through size one. The released fish cannot be rehooked. The device is so simple to use that it works well even in the dark. It is injection molded from glass filled nylon, has a non-slip handle and is essentially unbreakable.

The flat member is provided along a lateral side with a notch for a fish line to pass there and be held in place, and at a front side with a U-shaped recess forming a sharp blade for cutting a fish line. When using the device to extract a fishhook from a caught fish, first move the shank for the spiral portion to tangles with the fish line to which the fishhook is connected, then push the shank along the fish line into the fish's mouth to allow the spiral portion to catch the fishhook. Thereafter, the shank is slightly pushed further to back the fishhook a little, so that the fishhook is disengaged from the fish and can therefore be easily extracted without badly hurting the fish.

The fish hook removing device has an elongated hollow insertable portion that has an outer end portion and an inner end portion. An elongated straight handle portion depends downwardly at an angle from the inner end portion of the insertable portion. The insertable portion has a straight slot in its upper surface for receiving a portion of the fish line near the hook when the fish line is held tight. After the fish line has been inserted into the slot, the insertable portion is pushed into the mouth of the fish until it contacts the hook. A thumb is then placed over the fish line where the fish line exits from the insertable portion to keep the line tight between that point and the fish hook. A jab toward the mouth of the fish that pushes the insertable member into the fish mouth followed by a pull away from the mouth of the fish while the thumb is held in place removes the hook from the mouth of the fish.

摘要： A fish hook remover for humanely removing a hook from a fish is particularly useful for catch-and-release fishing. The fish hook remover has a handle for a user to manipulate, a hook engagement member, and two rods which connect the handle and the hook engagement member. These connections are located such that the hook remover acts similar to a four-bar linkage. When the handle, forming one side of the four-bar linkage, is rotated one direction, the hook engagement member, forming the opposing side of the four-bar linkage, is rotated the same direction, thereby allowing the user to remotely control the motion of the hook engagement member. The hook engagement member has a channel running through it. An opening in the hook engagement member allows the user to insert the fishing line which is then used as a guide to properly place the fish hook remover. The hook engagement member is slid downward until the fish hook slides into a notch located in the bottom of the hook engagement member. At this point the fish hook is locked in place within the fish hook remover and the hook may be removed. There are several way to remove the hook, but the most basic is to twist the handle so that the hook engagement member rotates 180° which removes the fish hook by backing the hook out of the flesh of the fish in the direction it entered, thereby causing the minimum amount of trauma possible.
