    • Device and method for keeping and growing aquatic organisms by optimizing the microbiological treatment of water. The device comprises a first chamber for holding oxygen-depleted water and a second chamber for holding oxygen-rich water, the first and second chambers being separated from one another by a porous substrate which comprises micro-organisms. In the active state, water circulates in the device across the porous substrate for the purpose of microbiological treatment. Using means for conditioning the oxygen-depleted water and oxygen-rich water next to one another results in the composition of the water being effectively kept at optimum values for the microbiological treatment of the water. In addition, sediment comprising waste matter is removed by separation means which are incorporated in an oxygen-depleted circuit and in an oxygen-rich circuit; this prevents the water from becoming turbid and prevents the accumulation of waste matter in the form of sediment. The present invention is so effective at controlling the composition of water that the water is able to maintain an oligotrophic environment for growing reef organisms, such as, inter alia, corals, sponges, molluscs, crustaceans and fish.

    • A filter system for a pond system. The pond system comprises a pump vault arranged such that unfiltered water in a pond flows into the pump vault, a pump, and a pump vault cover. The filter system comprises filter material adapted to remove impurities from unfiltered water to obtain filtered water and a frame structure connected to the pump vault cover for suspending the filter material within the pump vault. With this arrangement, unfiltered water first passes through the filter material before entering the pump. The filter material is removed from the pump vault for replacement and/or cleaning by removing the pump vault cover from the pump vault.

    • Filtering skimmers for ornamental ponds are provided that more effectively conceal the filtering skimmer to improve the appearance of the ornamental pond, and/or allow a filtering element to be mounted either vertically or horizontally. The filtering skimmer may include a conduit that projects laterally away from the sidewall of the filtering skimmer land defines a ledge onto which materials may be deposited to conceal the inlet of the filtering skimmer. In another aspect, an elongated extension tube provides a fluid passageway from an ornamental pond to the filtering skimmer inlet to facilitate better concealment of the filtering skimmer. In a further aspect, the filtering skimmer has opposing internal channels for retaining a substantially planar filtering element in a vertical orientation, and structure for supporting a filtering element in an alternative horizontal orientation.

    • A tank system and a method for accommodating aquatic life and particularly fish. The tank system comprises a holding tank for holding fluid to sustain aquatic life disposed therein and a filtering means in the form of a biofilter for receiving extraneous fluid from the top of the holding tank at one side thereof separated from the biofilter by a partition. A tank discharge means comprising a longitudinally extending lip surmounts the partition to permit the discharge and passage of extraneous fluid from the top of the holding tank via a prefilter to a filtering area in which the biofilter is disposed. Recirculating means including a network of pipes is provided for recirculating the extraneous fluid passed through biofilter by gravity, from the bottom of the filtering area back to the holding tank via one or pumps and a pair of water inlet lines. The water inlet lines are disposed at the base of the holding tank, opposite, and extending generally parallel, to the tank discharge means and inject fluid under pressure into the tank in a direction so as to provide for a uniform, circulatory cross-flow of fluid about a generally horizontal axis in substantially parallel relationship to the lip. A particular form of prefilter for extracting suspended solids and protein to a foam fractionator is also disclosed as well as a buffer tank arrangement for accommodating overfilling of the holding tank, and the process involved with generating the cross-flow.

    • The invention has the purpose of improving and maintaining the water quality inside bays where fish are cultivated, and achieving a habitat that is amenable for fish and other marine life. The supply of seawater from the open ocean into bays is controlled more by the tides than by the currents, and while oxygen-deficient marine areas occur near the ocean floor, the oxygen content in the seawater near the surface is held comparatively high by the photosynthesis of phytoplankton and dissolution from the atmosphere. Therefore, oxygen-deficient and oxygen-less areas can be easily dissipated and eliminated by stirring the sea floor, especially the water of the bottom layer, by means of a seawater pump. The system comprises a seawater pump 100 provided underwater and an oxygen concentration sensor provided near the sea floor, the system being capable of eliminating oxygen-deficient areas by operating the seawater pump 100 and stirring the water of the bottom layer when the measured oxygen concentration goes below a predetermined value.

    • A holder (4) for retaining an aerator conduit (5) for placement on the bottom (6) of an aquarium tank (1). The holder has a trough with at least one side wall (11a,b) and a retaining means, such as channel (12), in the trough. The holder may be supported in an upright position on the bottom of the aquarium tank by sand and gravel pressing against the outside surface of its side walls. Side walls further keep sand and gravel from covering the aerator conduit. A stabilizer base (14) may be provided on the bottom of the holder. The aerator holder provides for more evenly distributed air bubbles (2) in the aquarium and thus better oxygenation of the water for the fish contained therein. Preferably the holder is made of clear plastic so that it is virtually invisible to an observer, thereby providing an overall more aesthetic appearance for the aquarium.
