    • It is intended to improve work efficiency by eliminating the work of attaching and removing push rods during installing and dismounting the a blade mount and also to reduce abrasion of the push rods for pushing punching scrap out of a punching blade. The first push rods 18 are inserted movably in the first through-holes 16 formed in the knife cylinder and the second push rods 36 are inserted movably in the second through-holes 34 formed in the blade mount to permit the second push rods 36 to be abutted on the first push rods 18. A scrap push lever 30 is mounted on the outer end of the second push rod 36 to push out the punching scrap a and an eccentric cylinder 14 is provided inside of the knife cylinder 10 to push the first push rod 18 outward when pushing out the punching scrap a. The stroke of the first push rod 18 is controlled so that the outer end 18a of the first push rod 18 does not project from the outer periphery 10a of the knife cylinder. The first push rod 18 and the second push rod 36 are preferably made from one of self-lubricating resin and abrasion-resistant material.

    • A scoring or cutting assembly forms a part of a cutting die used to score and cut corrugated board. The scoring or cutting assembly includes a cutting or scoring rule secured to a die board. First and second elastomers are secured on the die board such that the scoring or cutting rule extends between the elastomers and there is defined a space between the scoring or cutting rule in each of the elastomers. There is also provided a pair of retainers, each retainer being secured to the die board adjacent an outboard side of the elastomers. During a cutting or scoring operation, the elastomers engage the corrugated board on opposite sides of the scoring or cutting rule and apply and inward force to the corrugated board towards the scoring or cutting rule. This causes the corrugated board to resist cracking on opposite sides of the scoring or cutting rule.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling the coherence of a high-pressure fluid jet directed toward a selected surface. In one embodiment, the coherence is controlled by manipulating a turbulence level of the fluid forming the fluid jet. The turbulence level can be manipulated upstream or downstream of a nozzle orifice through which the fluid passes. For example, in one embodiment, the fluid is a first fluid and a secondary fluid is entrained with the first fluid. The resulting fluid jet, which includes both the primary and secondary fluids, can be directed toward the selected surface so as to cut, mill, roughen, peen, or otherwise treat the selected surface. The characteristics of the secondary fluid can be selected to either increase or decrease the coherence of the fluid jet. In other embodiments, turbulence generators, such as inverted conical channels, upstream orifices, protrusions and other devices can be positioned upstream of the nozzle orifice to control the coherence of the resulting fluid jet.

    • A paper machine has a high pressure liquid pump for use with a liquid slitter for slitting a fiber material web. The high pressure liquid pump includes a pump shell having an axis of rotation and an annular smooth inwardly facing surface. The inwardly facing surface is configured for carrying a film of liquid thereon. A hydraulic shoe having an outer convexly curved working face is in close running engagement with the inwardly facing surface. A pivotal arm is connected with the shoe and positions the shoe relative to the inwardly facing surface. The arm is movable toward and away from the inwardly facing surface. A hydraulic pressure member is engaged with the arm for urging the shoe toward the inwardly facing surface dependent upon a hydraulic pressure therein. The pump shell is driven about the axis of rotation, thereby continuously moving the inwardly facing surface of the pump shell past the shoe and continuously forming a hydraulic wedge of high-pressure liquid between the inwardly facing surface and the working face.

    • A gap cutting sheeter having controls to adjust the cutting position of the first and second flying shears relative to each other to set the gap size to a particular printed sheet. The downstream flying shear can be set up to cut the leading edge or the following edge of while the web is moving. When cutting the leading edge, a flexible flipper is provided just ahead of the flying shear to contact and push successive cut chips toward a vacuum chip removal system. Alternating vacuum removes the chips, and pulsing positive air pressure against the underside of a leading, trimmed edge guides it over the chip removal vacuum chamber to the downstream conveyor. A knockdown vane is provided just after the flying shear to press the leading edge of a cut signature against the downstream deck plate to prevent wrinkling of the cut signatures. Simple and rapid gap size adjustment is accomplished by electronically controlling the relative positions and speed of the first and second flying shears, the speed of the incoming web relative to the downstream speed of the cut signatures and the synchronized control of the high pressure fed vacuum chip removal system. In either embodiment, the important feature of the invention is the simple and rapid gap size adjustment which is made possible by electronically controlling and mechanically phasing the relative positions and speed of the first and second flying shears, the speed of the incoming web relative to the downstream speed of the cut sheets or signatures and the synchronized control of the high pressure fed, vacuum chip removal system.

    • The scrap ejector has a relatively long and thin body made of stainless steel or other resilient and durable material. The leading end portion of the body overlies and is secured to the outer surface of the die roll. In its undeflected condition, the trailing end portion of the body is spaced radially from the die roll. In one embodiment the body has a pad of compressible elastomer upon the surface thereof distal from the die roll, and in another embodiment the body has an arcuate portion projecting from the aforesaid surface of the body. During passage of the scrap ejector through the nip between the die and anvil rolls engagement between the anvil roll and the resilient pad (in the first embodiment) or the arcuate portion (in the second embodiment) deflects the trailing end portion of the body to a position wherein its terminal end is closely adjacent the surface of the die roll and the leading surface of the cutting rule which trims the leading edge portion of the paperboard stock. Upon passage from the nip, the leading end portion of the body springs outwardly and ejects from the apparatus the scrap material produced by the trimming operation. The edges of the body preferably are rounded and smooth.
