    • A device is proposed for producing expanded flat material, comprising a cutting and expanding device and a coiling device, the starting material for which is a foil web, the expanding device having toothed belt pairs or the like conveyor means guided over partially driven deflection rollers, which conveyor means hold the foil web at the edges and makes it advance and gives the expanded strip a uniform structure over the entire width. This is characterized in that the expanding device on both sides of the foil web has respectively one toothed belt pair that guides the foil web vertically upwards with one lateral edge, starting from the horizontal plane, via hinged, optionally rigid, sliding blocks arranged in the interior area of the toothed belts, while the other lateral edge of the foil web is guided vertically downwards in the same manner, i.e., forming a scissor movement, and an expansion of the foil web is formed across the resulting diagonal.

    • A process and machine are provided for the formation of expanded mesh materials in which a slotted starting sheet is bent along at least one succession of alternate strand diagonals (1,2, 3, 4, 5; A, B, C, D), each strand (20) in any one diagonal being bent simultaneously in at least two positions in the same manner and to the same extent so that the strands (20) of the strand diagonal (1, 2, 3, 4, 5; A, B, C, D) being bent remain in substantially parallel planes during and after bending.     • In method and apparatus for making continuous strips for lead acid batteries, a strip of lead is advanced through a plurality of successive stations such that zigzag slits are formed on the strip, either in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis or inclined to the longitudinal axis of the strip, between belt-shaped unslitted edge portions and a central unslitted portion. The strip is then stretched by application of a continuous force substantially simultaneously to the entire width of the slit portion of the strip by successively larger vertical components normal to the plane of the strip between both unslitted edge portions and the central unslitted portion. Simultaneously therewith, frictional resistance is applied to the zigzag slits so that the strip forms a substantially V-shaped cross-section vertical to the advancing direction of the strip to form the grid cells. The V-shaped strip is then leveled and flattened.
