    • Disclosed is a housing assembly for twin latching mechanisms. The housing assembly includes two handles that can be pivoted to separately unlatch two belt connectors. The latching mechanisms are positioned within the housing such that when the handles are pivoted upwardly, their leading edges engage plunger mechanisms associated with the latching mechanisms. By engaging the plunger mechanisms, individual latches are disengaged and the associated belt connectors are ejected. A flange interconnects the two handles such that one or both handles are pivoted depending upon which handle is lifted by the operator. The housing provides a secure enclosure for the latch mechanisms and also shields the working components from the environment.

    • A mechanical engagement system such as a seat belt assembly includes a housing and a slider slidably received within the housing, the slider is configured for movement between a first position and a second position within the housing. A single magnet is associated with the slider for slidable movement therewith while a hall effect device is fixed relative to the housing. The hall effect device is fixed relative to the housing and aligned with at the single magnet when the slider is in the second position. The hall effect device is configured to generate an output signal indicative of a latch condition of the mechanical engagement system as applied to the sensor assembly.

    • A separable buckle (such as a seat belt buckle for occupants of vehicles) adapted to connect two separable belts. A first structural member in the form of a floating link is typically secured permanently to one end of a first belt. A second structural member is adapted to be permanently secured to the end of the other belt. Permanently attached to the second structural member is a lever which is pivotable about a control axis near the distal end of said second structural member. The control axis is preferably elevated above the plane defined by the remote ends of the two structural members. At an intermediate position along the lever is provided an open-face cusp, which is adapted to receive the distal end of the floating link. In latching the buckle, the lever is rotated to an extended position, and the distal end of the floating link is rested against the cusp. By rotating the lever through about 180.degree. to a folded condition alongside the second structural member, the floating link is drawn toward the second structural member. By causing the lever to rotate "over-center", the buckle becomes essentially self-latching. Means are also provided for securing auxilliary straps, such as shoulder straps or leg straps, to the buckle when it is latched.
