    • An exemplary embodiment of the jet motor includes a control sleeve, and power shaft having at least one opening thereon. The power shaft is rotatable in relation to the control sleeve. The power shaft has a central longitudinal shaft axis and upper and lower ends. The at least one opening in the power shaft generates rotational torque when acting in cooperation with the control sleeve. The jet motor connects to a member that is in fluid communication with the source of drilling or cleaning fluid. Drilling or cleaning fluid pressure is directed to the at least one opening in the power shaft. The power shaft having at least one opening having an opening axis and an interior opening. The at least one opening may be acutely oriented with respect to a plane extending along the power shaft's central longitudinal axis wherein the plane intersects the opening axis at the interior opening. The at least one opening may be oriented toward the upper end of the power shaft to provide downward force. An alternative embodiment with a drill bit functionally connected to the power shaft wherein the drill bit contains drill bit nozzles that provide both rotational and forward force when a fluid is passed therethrough.

    • The invention is directed to a turbine (3) for generating power in a drill string (2), including a turbine rotor (10) drivable by a fluid and a bypass device having a first bypass channel bypassing the turbine rotor (10). For varying the volumetric flow through the bypass channel, provision is made for a valve (28) and a control device driven by the fluid and having a drive element (24) by means of which the valve (28) is movable anywhere between a first and a second position. The drive element (24) produces a flow resistance in the fluid flow path downstream from the turbine rotor (10) and downstream from the valve (28) and in the flow direction takes support upon a spring (26).

    • A drilling assembly in an elongated hole including a housing defining an interior with a plurality of motor stages in the interior. Each motor stage has at least one blade with supporting platform surfaces. A casing within the interior surrounds the plurality of motor stages and defines an annular flowpath with the housing. The casing also defines at least one offtake passage adjacent each motor stage. A shielding fluid passes through the annular flowpath and, in turn, the at least one offtake of each motor stage to coat and protect the at least one blade and supporting platform surfaces. A driving fluid passes through the casing for propelling the at least one blade of each motor stage. Preferably, the shielding fluid is at a relatively higher pressure than the driving fluid with a substantially constant ratio maintained between the between the shielding fluid and the driving fluid.

    • The turbodrill disclosed consists of a shell (1) attached to the drilling string and provided with an opening (3) in the side surface, a multistage turbine and a hollow shaft (6) supported in the shell (1) by radial bearings (10) and a thrust bearing (11). The bore (7) of the shaft (6) is hydraulically linked up with the drilling string (2) and with a space (15) provided above the nozzles of the bit (13). Seals (16, 17) keeping the drilling fluid out of the space (12) contained where the thrust bearings (11) are provided in an annular space between the shell (1) and the shaft (6).The present invention can be used to advantage in turbodrills employed for the drilling of deep oil and natural gas wells under difficult geological conditions.

    • A fluid lubricated bearing assembly for use with an in-hole fluid motor has a housing and a shaft supported in the housing by a plurality of stacked adjustable bearings, through which thrust is transmitted to the shaft from a single thrust transfer point in the housing. The thrust bearings are individually adjustable to eliminate tolerance and thrust elements transfer load from the housing to the bearings from the single thrust transfer point. In the preferred form, the thrust elements include a flow restrictor sleeve in thrust transmission relation with bearings at opposite sides thereof. The flow restrictor sleeve cooperates with a companion flow restrictor sleeve on the shaft to limit the flow of fluid through the bearings from the motor. Radial contact bearings at opposite ends of the flow restrictor support the flow restrictor sleeves to minimize wear and resist bending forces applied radially of the sleeves.

    • A turbo drill which is connected to a string of drill pipe as a rotating shaft for driving a drill bit which may be a rotary bit or a high speed solid head diamond bit. The turbine section has rotor and stator blades which are crescent shaped in cross section with each blade having an exit angle of 14.degree.- 23.degree. from maximum turbine efficiency. The bearing shaft is provided with chevron rotary seals positioned below the rotary bearings carrying both radial and vertical thrust. Fluid lubricant fills the space from the rotary seals to a predetermined level above the bearings. A piston seals the lubricant chamber and is pressurized by drilling fluid (i.e., mud) flowing through the tool. A layer of lubricant fluid overlies the first piston and has a second piston covering said fluid and transmitting pressure from the drilling fluid to the lubricant fluid surrounding the bearings. A plug member in the bearing shaft is positioned to be dislodged at the low lubricant position of the first piston to provide a temporary obstruction to the flow of drilling fluid to give an indication, at the well surface, of loss of lubricant in the turbo drill. An optional feature provides for increasing the pressure drop of drilling fluid in the turbo drill to cause the vertical thrust to be carried on the bottom vertical thrust bearings, after the top vertical thrust bearings are worn, and thus extend the drilling life substantially. A further optional feature is a locking ring arrangement which prevents separation of threaded connections in the drill housing during use.
