    • The invention relates to an escalator or moving walkway that includes a drive shaft rotating at a relatively low peripheral speed around a horizontal axis and at least one sealing element associated with the drive shaft. Lubricant is supplied to the drive shaft and can escape from leakages at the one sealing element. A device is provided for a permanent recirculation of the lubricant escaping from the leakages. The device includes at least one conveyor element arranged downstream of the sealing element, seen in the direction of the leakage, and at least one recirculation element for the lubricant. The recirculation element cooperates with the conveyor element to return the lubricant into a region upstream of the at least one sealing element.

    • A seal for hydraulically sealing a piston rod that travels axially into and out of a housing, preferably in a hydraulic dashpot. The seal comprises a preferably resilient-plastic sealing component (5). The sealing component is provided with one or more sharp ridges (10, 11, & 12) that rest against the piston rod, is tensioned across an elastomeric component (8), and is radially and axially secured along with the latter in a seal holder (2). The sealing component has an axial cylindrical wall (6) and a radial annular flange (7). The wall rests snug against the piston rod. The elastomeric component is annular and is provided with an inner surface (9) that tapers in toward the center of the housing and that the wall rests against. The outer surface of the elastomeric component is accommodated subject to radial tension in a setback (13) in the seal holder. The object is a seal that will satisfactorily prevent the escape of fluid at low temperatures, whereby the sealing component will be subjected to minimal force at high temperatures. The radial tension accordingly varies along the axial height (16) of the elastomeric component.

    • An improved generally annular split sealing ring includes generally curved radially inner and outer surfaces and opposed first and second axial surfaces extending between the inner and outer surfaces. The sealing ring has an axially extending, radially centered axis and a cut extend therethrough from the inner radial surface to the outer radial surface to create a gap to facilitate installation and removal of the sealing ring. The cut extends through the sealing ring along a single continuous cut plane. The orientation of the cut plane is determined by establishing a first reference plane extending radially through the sealing ring and generally parallel to and through the axis. A second reference plane extends generally perpendicular to the first reference plane and midway between the first and second axial surfaces to establish a first generally radially extending reference line. A third reference plane extends generally perpendicular to the first and second reference planes and midway between the inner and outer radial surfaces to establish a second generally axially extending reference line and a third reference line. The cut plane is oriented at a first predetermined angle with respect to the second reference plane and the first reference line and at a second predetermined angle with respect to the third reference plane and the third reference line.

    • A packing gland assembly providing separate tightening of a packing seal in both the axial and radial directions. Tightening of the packing seal in the aforesaid directions is provided by a pair of concentric sleeves mounted about a shaft wherein the latter may experience either rotational or axial movement or both with respect to a housing surrounding the shaft. The packing seal is disposed on the shaft with one of its axial end faces abutting the housing with the other of its end faces abutting the inner sleeve. With the inner sleeve being selectively positioned in an axial direction, the axial pressure on the packing seal can be adjusted. In addition, a segmented ring is provided to encompass the packing seal to urge the latter into radial engagement with the shaft. The outer surface of the segmented ring is beveled to engage the outer sleeve in a wedge type of manner so that upon selected axial movement of the outer sleeve, the segmented ring adjustably tightens the packing seal against the shaft.
