    • Embodiments of this invention include orthotic devices for treating hoof ailments, including laminitis and founder, and methods of treating the hoof ailments using an orthotic. In one embodiment, the hoof orthotic includes a platform having a heel end, a toe end, an inside and an outside edge, the heel end comprising a center section of the platform. The toe end includes a first tip and a second tip having a space therebetween such that the toe end is not enclosed. The platform includes an upper hoof contact surface and a lower surface, the upper surface being elevated at the heel end of the platform and sloping such that the heel end has a greater vertical height than the toe end. The orthotic also includes attachment means that extend vertically from the platform for attaching the orthotic to the animal hoof. The orthotic can be made from a resilient and/or elastomeric material that may also provide cushioning and fitting advantages.

    • A surgical block for attachment to a healthy claw of a cleft-footed animal is made of a blend of polyvinyl chloride and calcium carbonate. The block has parallel faces which are mirror images of each other. The faces are joined by a planar sidewall extending the full length of the block, and a second side wall having a planar section parallel to the first side wall and a forwardly disposed curved section forming the forward end of the block. A planar end wall is perpendicular to the planar portions of the two side walls. Each of the faces has a plurality of longitudinally extending zigzag grooves to receive an acrylic adhesive to attach the block to the animal's claw.

The metal frame further includes a plurality of nail driving holes, a plurality of nonslip ribs for preventing relative slip of the metal frame with respect to the horse's hoof and a rugged surface for permitting a nailhead of the nail to become engaged therewith in order to prevent the horseshoe form being loosen. This rugged surface is formed on an inner surface of the second protrusion.

    • A horseshoe comprised principally of semihard polyurethane capable of being reversibly heated to about 275.degree. F. for hot-attachment with a gap-filling adhesive in accordance with the process of the author's prior patent. The shoe has an angular cross section with one leg of the angle bonded to the sidewall of the hoof and the other leg to the bottom of the hoof. The upper leg is of sufficient rigidity to make the L-beam cross section of the shoe strong enough to withstand bending moments without the addition of metal strengthening members. The hot shoe is pliably fit to the contour of the individual hoof as it is being bonded; precise fitting is not required because the adhesive is gap-filling. Lateral relative motion between the shoe and the hoof is prevented by an anchoring mechanism into the sulci of the frog. Case hardened steel plates in the toe and heel regions of the shoe provide superior wear resistance. Overall, the horseshoe is light weight, will remain bonded to the hoof under severe conditions, and has wear resistance superior to conventional steel horseshoes.
