    • A multi-piece crucible for high temperature applications comprises a tubular side wall member having a lip on the inside surface and a bottom member or members forming a container for containing a melt of a material during a high temperature melt-casting operations. The multi-piece design prevents cracking of the crucible or leakage of the melt from the crucible during the melt-casting operation. The lip of the tubular member supports the bottom member. The contacting surfaces where the lip of the tubular side wall member contacts the bottom member of the multi-piece crucible contains a ceramic sealing material. The ceramic sealing material forms a seal sufficient to prevent the melt of the material from leaking out of the multi-piece crucible during the melt-casting process. The multi-piece crucible is made of a material which is chemically inert to the melt and has structural integrity at the melting point temperature of the melt, or of a material coated with such a material.

    • A fluid pressure relief assembly for a system operating under an elevated pressure includes a support structure having means defining a bore therethrough of desired cross-sectional configuration, the support structure being provided with a shoulder extending transversely into the bore and presenting a peripheral abutment surface which divides the bore into a first zone an a second zone. The assembly further includes a bidirectional relief means having a central frangible section, and means mounting the relief means across the bore of the support structure in normal flow blocking relationship thereto. A peripheral portion of the central frangible section is disposed to engage the shoulder for support thereby. The central portion of the frangible section within the innermost margin of the shoulder is constructed to undergo rupture only when the pressue in the first zone exceeds the pressure in the second zone by a preselected first magnitude. The peripheral portion of the frangible section which engages the shoulder includes means causing the frangible section to rupture when the pressure in the second zone exceeds the pressure in the first zone by a preselected second magnitude, and means extending around a substantial part of the circumferential extent of the peripheral portion for increasing its structural integrity. A method for constructing a fluid pressure relief assembly for a system operating under an elevated pressure is also disclosed. Also disclosed is an embodiment of the invention wheren the relief means is unidirectional.

    • A bursting disc assembly comprises a generally tubular body provided with an external screw thread and, at one end of the body, a counterbore which forms an annular seat within the body to accommodate at least the peripheral regions of a preferably flat bursting disc; a bursting disc located on the seat and a plug with a longitudinal bore pushed into and a tight fit within the counterbore so as to hold the bursting disc in place, the plug being prevented from rotating with respect to the body by knurls which bite into the walls of the counterbore. In use, the assembly is screwed into the housing of a pressure relief device so that the free end of the plug bears against and forms a fluid-tight seal with an opening in the base of the housing and at the same time, the other end of the plug compresses the bursting disc against the seat so as to form fluid-tight seals between plug, bursting disc and seat.

    • A safety pressure relief assembly of the rupture disc type guards against pressure differentials, beyond a predetermined range in a vent system, and includes a relief disc perforated to permit reverse flow without rupture, a sealing disc positioned adjacent the relief disc and blocking positive flow through the perforations, a support member with a stay structure positioned to support the sealing disc nested within the relief disc, and a cutting member positioned to cut the sealing disc at a predetermined vacuum within the vent system. The relief disc has a concave surface and a convex surface. When a predetermined vacuum pressure differential is applied to the assembly, the sealing disc and the support structure are inverted to project away from the relief disc. During the inversion, the support structure is recessed between cutting blades of the cutting member and the sealing disc impacts the cutting blades and is cut thereby into a pattern having petals and a silhouette portion in the shape of the support structure. As fluid under pressure flows through the rupture disc assembly, the silhouette portion of the sealing disc is supported by the support structure and is located between the cutting blades. After cutting by the blades, the petal portions are no longer supported by the support structure and fold out of the way of the fluid to open channels or passageways through the rupture disc assembly and permit rapid equilibration of pressure between opposite sides of the system without loose portions of the assembly being formed.

    • A rupturable pressure relief apparatus which is non-fragmenting and which is particularly suitable for liquid and low pressure gas service. The apparatus includes an annular rupture disk having an annular flange portion connected to a concave-convex portion by a circular transition connection. The concave-convex portion includes a groove in a side thereof creating a substantially circular line of weakness therein and at least one concave-convex hinge reinforcing member is attached to a side of the concave-convex portion of the rupture disk. The hinge reinforcing member is positioned and is of a shape whereby upon rupture of the rupture disk, the concave-convex portion tears along the line of weakness created by the groove and bends about an integral untorn portion corresponding with the hinge reinforcing member.

    • A pressure release assembly provides controlled depressurization of a sea gas-containing vessel, such as a xenon-filled arc lamp, when the temperature of the gas in the vessel reaches a value corresponding to a selected pressure. The assembly comprises a thin metallic rupture plate that hermetically seals an aperture in a wall of the vessel, and a back-up disc that is supported adjacent the other surface of the rupture plate. The back-up disc reinforces the rupture plate so as to prevent bursting of the rupture plate at pressures below the selected pressure. The back-up disc is made of a material that loses its tensile strength at the temperature corresponding to the selected pressure, whereby the weakening of the back-up disc at the selected pressure causes the rupture plate to burst. The back-up plate may be made of a eutectic alloy that melts at the temperature corresponding to the selected pressure.
