    • A communication system is adapted to accommodate changes in bandwidth demand through the use of modular components. According to a preferred embodiment a plurality of communication interface modules, such as radio modules, are coupled to a communication signal processor, such as a multi-port modem, in order to serve an initial bandwidth demand. Thereafter, additional communication signal processors may be added, being coupled to one or more of the communication interface modules decoupled from the initially deployed communication signal processor, to serve an increased bandwidth demand. Preferably, an expansion chassis architecture is used to accommodate a number of communication signal processors at least equivalent to the number of communication information interfaces of the plurality. In preferred embodiments, the communication interface modules operate upon different channels, such as radio frequency channels, although coupling to the communication signal processor upon a same channel, such as a common intermediate frequency channel.

    • An improved mounting base 300 for telecommunications equipment racks, including i) first and second side members 310-A and 310-B having upper planar portions 315 including means 311 for coupling the mounting base to a bottom portion of an equipment rack; and ii) forward and rearward cross members 320-A and 320-B having lower planar portions 325 including means 326 for coupling the mounting base to a floor surface. The upper planar portion 315 of each side member is disposed above the lower planar portions 326 of each cross member. When coupled to a bottom portion of an equipment rack, the forward cross member 320-A is disposed proximate a front portion of the equipment rack and defines an access passage between the lower planar portion 325 of the forward cross member and the bottom portion of the equipment rack, such that the access passage allows frontal access to the means 326 for coupling of the rearward cross member to a floor surface.

    • A communication device includes a number of transmitter/receiver/modem blocks installed in vertical positions. Each of the transmitter/receiver/modem blocks includes a supporting board having a front surface and a back surface, the supporting board including a plurality of fins on the front surface and a plurality of forced air-cooling fans on the supporting board. A front cover encloses the front surface of the supporting board, the front cover and the fins forming a plurality of ducts, the front cover and the front surface forming an internal opening under the fins. A back cover encloses the back surface of the supporting board. First heat-radiating circuit modules are provided at positions adjacent to the fins on the front surface. A second heat-radiating circuit module is provided within the opening. When the forced air-cooling fans operate, the fans produce a flow of air along the plurality of ducts to cool the first heat-radiating circuit modules, and the fans producing a flow of air within the opening to cool the second heat-radiating circuit board.

    • A water meter transmission system reads data from a water meter and wirelessly transmits data to a central billing or receiving system. Disclosed transmission systems are fully integrated and contained within pit housings such that electronic components are well protected. A spiral antenna is integrated into a specially configured integrated antenna cover which fits into the top cover of a pit housing. The antenna cover and/or upper lip area of the upper lip of the main housing may comprise a distal barrier and a medial barrier used to exclude water and contaminates. Disclosed transmission systems offer high output and low power consumption and vitiate the need for meter readers to physically access a water meter or other meters.
