    • A circuit for correcting frequency errors in an incoming signal that includes a particular frequency signal. The circuit includes dual phase locked loop circuitry for providing a frequency feedback control, detecting circuitry for detecting the presence of the particular coded signal and generating a hold signal, and a sample and hold circuitry disposed in the feedback path of the phase locked loop circuitry and responsive to the hold signal for setting the feedback control at a particular value to provide an optimal frequency error correction for the particular frequency signal and for holding the feedback control at the particular value for the entire spectrum of the incoming signal, whereby the frequency feedback control set for the particular frequency tone is used for the entire spectrum of the incoming signal to minimize the error in the output frequencies of the circuit.

    • Existing wire-line public switched telephone networks and Caller Identification (“CallerID”) systems operated by local telephone companies are utilized to deliver email notification to users via the users'telephone lines. The present invention queries the user's ISP remote server to determine whether any email addressed to the user is received by and/or stored thereon and, if so, causes an associated CallerID server of, for instance, the local telephone company to send an email notification signal in a format compatible with operating CallerID protocols to an email notification device using a public switched telephone network. By transmitting email notification signals over existing telephone lines, the present invention is widely available to users and advantageously eliminates the need for users to maintain a paging or cable service and, perhaps more importantly, does not require the user to maintain an online cable connection, an online Internet connection, or a paging device. In some embodiments, email notification signals in accordance with the present invention are transmitted during telephone ringing intervals and, in other embodiments, are transmitted prior to the first telephone ringing signal. In one embodiment, an email notification signal containing at least a portion of the text of unread email received by and/or stored on the user ISP email server is transmitted to the user via the public switched telephone network.

    • A centralized test apparatus is provided for a telecommunications network which includes local switches and a core network. Each local switch is connected through terminating lines to terminating equipment such as telephone handsets. The test apparatus enables a field engineer to obtain the identity of a terminating line from one of the local switches. When a field engineer dials the number of the test apparatus, the test apparatus retrieves the calling line identity on answering the call. It then transmits the calling line identity in speech form back to the calling line. After transmitting the calling line identity, the test apparatus offers a menu of further services which comprise a ring back service and the provision of a test tone on a specified telephone line.

    • In those transparent tone-in-band systems which employ a single oscillator in the transmitter to generate a frequency notch between upper and lower portions of a band which is to be transmitted, there is not complete freedom to choose the width of the notch. In the present invention which also uses a single transmitter oscillator, one portion of the band transmitted is selected using a filter. A mixer is used to change the frequency of the input band in a way which does not allow the lower sideband to "fold" back at zero frequency and interfere with the lower transmitted portion. A further filter selects the other portion for transmission from the output of the mixer.
