One claim recites a method comprising: obtaining data representing captured imagery, the captured imagery depicting packaging including digital watermarking, the digital watermarking including an orientation signal that is detectable in a transform domain; generating a n-dimensional feature set of the data representing captured imagery, the n-dimensional feature set representing the captured imagery in a spatial domain, where n is an integer great than 13; using a trained classifier to predict the presence of the orientation signal in a transform domain from the feature set in the spatial domain. Of course, other claims and combinations are provided too.

    • Novel methods and systems for quantization based data embedding and reading in host signals, such as image, audio and video signals. To embed auxiliary data in a host signal, an embedder maps the host signal from a first domain into a mapped signal in a second domain. The embedder performs quantization based embedding of auxiliary data into the host signal using quantizers. The quantizers are adapted such that the relationship between corresponding quantizers in the first and second domains satisfies a predetermined constraint. The mapping improves the robustness of the data embedding method by increasing the chances that the embedded data can be recovered by an auxiliary data reader after modifications. A related embedding method projects the mapped signal unto a vector, and specifically, a pseudorandom vector. It performs quantization based embedding on the projected signal. The use of this projection provides added robustness of the embedded data to noise and other forms of distortion.

    • A system and methodology for encoding or decoding hidden data, such as a digital watermark, in raster media is provided in delta domain, a domain that creates a high-pass version of the raster media. Hidden data, such as a watermark, can be embedded in the general smooth region (low variance region) while a strong edge is preserved. A Mean-Square Error (MSE) reduction can be obtained by embedding the watermark in the delta domain. Using checkerboard-pattern watermark sequences and the delta domain, at least half of the total pixels in the image remain unchanged after watermark embedding. In order to recover the hidden data, some side information can be conveyed, in-band or out-of-band, to a decoder, such as various parameters used when performing the method. If protection from attacks, such as a JPEG encoding attack is desired, a location map can be provided to assist with hidden data recovery.
