    • A scanner for reading characters from a string of characters recorded on a surface as well as reading bar code information encoded in bar codes. Upon obtaining either the text or the bar code information, the information is transferred to a remote location via impulse radio wireless techniques. The character or bar code scanner may include a lens of variable magnification so as to accommodate variable size print. The scanner is in communication with an external information processing apparatus such as a computer through an impulse radio wireless transmitter/receiver. The value of each pixel detected by the scanner is determined by comparing the light reflection value with a threshold that is adjusted in accordance with the values of pixels detected and averaged over previous frames. The hand-held scanner and impulse radio transceiver and impulse radio antenna may be housed in any elongate housing for pen-like use or in a palm-held housing such as a typical mouse. The novel impulse radio wireless interface allows large data throughput while avoiding many traditional wireless shortfalls such as multipath and RF and optical interference. Distance determination by impulse radio means provides for varying the data rates of the communication between the impulse radio and a remote device based on said distance and allows for a warning that the distance from said remote device to said scanner is exceeding a predetermined limit.

    • A small hand-held optical scanning device for the accurate and precise scanning of lines of text characters is described. The scanner does not require any mechanical means of providing tachometer-like or encoder-like scanning signals in order to establish an accurate reproduction of the scanned text. An auxiliary single element detector samples the scanned text at an advanced (retarded) position relative to the main one dimensional scanner of the device. This advanced detector sensor, together with appropriate and disclosed software algorithms, permits the accurate correction of baseline imperfections as well as corrections for scan-speed non-uniformities and basic scan-speed errors. The processed scanner output is sufficiently faithful to the scanned text that optical character recognition (OCR) software can precisely interpret the scanned images and subsequently provide an accurate ASCII representation of the scanned text. Arbitrary characters, such as Kanji symbols, can be scanned accurately, which also permits the application of optical character recognition (OCR) software which is dedicated to such text characters.

    • A method and device for recording, storing and reproducing graphic symbols such as text, indeograms and the like on a carrier comprises an independent portable assembly with an optical pick up, a memory for the storage of data and a printer. Graphic symbols can be picked up by placing the optical pick up in contact with, or in close proximity to, the carrier and drawing it along the line of text or symbols to be copied. These symbols are recorded in the memory and can be reproduced by placing the printer against another carrier and drawing the device across it. The quality of recording and reproduction is independent of the speed at which the device is drawn along the line of text, since the optical pick up is arranged to scan the symbols each time the device is advanced a predetermined distance.

    • An electronic microcopier apparatus includes a reading head, an electronic memory and a writing head, all contained within a small case that may be held in the hand. In the reading mode the instrument is passed over images, such as written text, where photosensors read the optical information and transmit that information to the electronic memory. The electronic memory stores the information until the device is used in the writing mode. In the writing mode, the information from the electronic memory is fed to a writing head and is faithfully reproduced on a piece of paper. A wheel with angular markings rolls as the copier is displaced over the textural material in both reading and writing modes and thereby makes it possible to ascertain the position of the copier. The invention has the advantage of extreme portability. Several alternative embodiments of the invention are disclosed.
