    • Disclosed herein are devices and methods for communicating full-rate voice data under an ATM protocol. An exemplary device is configured to communicate voice data through a vocoder in a CDMA backbone network using an ATM Adaptation Layer 0 (AAL0) cell-generating system, which is configured to generate an AAL0 cell for each frame of full-rate voice data. In an exemplary embodiment, the device generates AAL0 cells that each comprise (a) 5 bytes of a Header field; (b) 1 byte of a Length field indicating a size of the voice data; (c) 24 bytes of a Voice-Data field containing the voice data; (d) 19 bytes of a Control-Data field containing information for controlling the voice data; (e) 1 byte of an Error-Detection field containing information for detecting an error of the voice data; and (f) 3 bytes of a PAD field for padding data used to exactly fit into the ATM cell.

    • In order to support both signalling processing on a per channel basis and multiple adaptation protocols, an interface (10) is modularised principally by function. Incident channels (60-62, Cho—Chn) are applied to a routing device (16) that consults a connection map (64) to determine an appropriate path, via an interface (90), for signal processing of each channel, as shown in FIG. 2. Modularised processing platforms (70-74) each contain a number of signal processors (80-86), with each processing platform providing an additional level of indirection with respect to channel handling. In this latter respect, one of the signal processors (86) on each platform is assigned to distribute channel processing to appropriately configured other ones of the signal processors and such that signal processing functions may be distributed between the other ones (80-84) of the signal processors. The present invention is particularly useful in relation to a narrowband-broadband interface to support differing adaptation protocols that require different signal processing functions and also to vary signal processing capabilities on a per call basis.

    • The present invention relates to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) protocol, and more particularly to an ATM Adaptation Layer 0 (AAL0) cell format for increasing trunk path efficiency when communicating voice traffic data by using the ATM protocol in a CDMA system. In a conventional CDMA system, the ATM is used to communicate multimedia traffic, including voice traffic data, through a backbone network, and AAL5 cell is most widely used in the ATM since it provides a simple and efficient process for data traffic. However, when processing full-rate voice traffic (i.e., 24 bytes of voice data per 20 ms-frame), two AAL5 cells are needed to communicate the full-rate voice data because one AAL5 includes only 16 bytes of data. This may result in few problems (e.g., traffic overload, cell loss and so forth). In order to eliminate the above problems, the present invention employs an AAL0 cell, in which 8 bytes of trailer are sacrificed and assigned to the voice traffic data, to enhance trunk path efficiency.

    • First and second partially filled ATM cells are removed from a cell stream and merged into a third ATM cell. The third ATM cell may then be inserted back into the cell stream. The third ATM cell may include header information indicative of the number of partially filled ATM cells from which it was created. To accommodate these operations, a data communication device, such as an ATM switch, includes means for identifying partially filled ATM cells within an ATM cell stream. The device also includes means for merging at least two of the partially filled ATM cells into a merged ATM cell and means for inserting the merged ATM cell back into the ATM cell stream. The means for identifying partially filled ATM cells may comprise a lookup table stored in a computer readable medium and indexable using logical connection identification information. The scheme can be used on a link-by-link basis within an ATM network or across multiple hops within such a network for combining cells traveling along a common route. The scheme is not limited to combining information on the same virtual channel or information which travels only between a common source and destination.

    • A terminating apparatus for an ATM adaptation layer is made of hardware logic circuits to terminate received cells connection by connection and assemble an ATM adaptation layer message for each connection from data contained in the received cells. The apparatus is compact and operates at high speed. The structure of the apparatus is independent of the number of connections to terminate. The apparatus has a-header extractor (4-6) for extracting a virtual path indication/virtual channel indication (VPI/VCI) from a received cell, a CRC unit (4-5) shared by cells of different connections, a reception processor (4-4) for determining whether or not the received cell is the last cell of an ATM adaptation layer message according to a payload type indication (PTI) contained in a header of the received cell and processing the received cell, a work memory (4-8) for storing, for each connection, a CRC result and the number of received cells, and a reception buffer (4-9) for sequentially storing, for each connection, data contained in cells received for the connection.
