    • A telephone line repeater (28) includes a pattern decoder/recognizer (100) which recognizes, inter alia, an input interrogating signal transmitted on a telephone network (20). The interrogating signal includes an address field (302) having at least one subfield (304) therein. The pattern decoder (100) determines that its repeater (28) is to be tested, if a predetermined subfield (304) of the interrogating signal is configured according to a predetermined select convention. When the repeater (28) recognizes that it is being addressed, a controller (110) causes the addressed repeater to "loop back", returning, in alternating sequence, test-indicative no-operation signals and diagnostic information ("DSM") signals generated by the repeater. Methods for testing a repeater and methods for testing telephone networks are also disclosed.

    • Two sets of line terminals in a pair of PCM head stations are interconnected by a set of transmission channels via a number of cascaded relay stations each including a line repeater for each channel. A service link extends from an address generator in one head station to a monitoring unit in each relay station, the monitoring unit including a regenerating circuit for throughgoing address codes and further including a discriminating network which, upon detecting an address code identifying that relay station, sends a sinusoidal priming signal to all the associated repeaters. A predetermined PCM test code, e.g. one containing a certain number of consecutive zeroes, is simultaneously transmitted from the same head station over the channel containing a selected repeater to be checked which, upon coincidence of the test code with the priming signal from the associated monitoring unit, closes a loop for feeding back the test code to the originating line terminal.

    • For a digital communication system comprising a plurality of repeaters between two terminals from one of which the repeaters are to be selectively controllable for fault-location or remote-control purposes, repeaters are disclosed each of which has its address stored unalterably in its address memory, so that the address resembles a serial number as is commonly used as an equipment identification. This saves any adjustment work during the installation of repeaters into the communication system. Also disclosed is a fault finder for such a communication system which is capable of successively interrogating the repeaters in the system for their addresses and their locations in the system, and of writing these addresses together with the associated locations into a memory. The repeaters then contain suitable devices which cooperate with this fault finder.

    • The method consists in momentarily replacing the data transmitted by a digital data link with a digital message comprising two non-consecutive sequences, with the first sequence being a prefix sequence and the other sequence being a suffix sequence. The period of time separating the prefix and suffix sequences is variable and encodes remote signalling data. FIG. 2 shows a message transmitter circuit fitted in digital link equipment for operation at a very high data rate, and provided with a circuit (6') for detecting and handing alarms and with a circuit (3) for recovering the bit rate from the digital stream. A pattern generator (10) serves to generate a 1000 pattern and its 0111 complement from the recovered check rate. An oscillator (20) has a period which defines the time interval separating the prefix sequence and the suffix sequence. This oscillator controls a sequencer (25) which in turn controls a prefix sequence building circuit (30) and a suffix sequence building circuit (40) both of which act via logic gates on a circuit for selecting pattern types and on switching means (19) for inserting the selected sequence into the digital stream instead data.

    • In an optical digital communication system having a plurality of optical repeaters inserted in an optical fiber cable, and a pair of terminal stations installed at the extreme ends of the optical fiber cable, the designation of the particular repeater from the terminal station is performed by the remote control signal which has the pulse pattern with the period designated to each repeater. Each repeater may have a plurality of switches for switching lasers for improving the operational reliability of the same by the redundant technique, and the control and/or the designation of the particular switch is also performed by said remote control signal by selecting the particular period and/or the repetition numbers of the period of the pulse pattern. Since the pulse pattern with the particular period and/or the repetition times of the period, and/or the repetition times and the sequence of the periods are utilized for designating the particular repeater and the switch in the designated repeater, the large number of objects (repeaters and switches) can be controlled, and the operational reliability of the control (designation) is very high.
