    • Techniques describe tuning a plurality of radio stations, buffering digital audio data from each tuner, recognizing programming segments in the buffer, identifying content (e.g., song title and artist) of at least some segments, selecting from among the identified segments, and providing the selected segments to a listener. In an example, at least two signals are simultaneously tuned from at least two radio stations. Digital audio data and metadata obtained from the tuning may be buffered. The buffered data may be segmented into programming segments. Information may be obtained about the programming segments. For example, a song title and artist may be obtained for a programming segment comprising a song. In another example, a second programming segment may be identified as a commercial or may remain unidentified. The obtained information identifying programming segments may be analyzed to identify listener-preferred programming segments. Preferred programming segments may then be provided to the listener.

    • A sound system with a radio receiver having the ability to automatically tune to a new radio station if (a) the current radio station is broadcasting a song, program or other content that the user dislikes and/or (b) one of one or more predetermined radio stations is broadcasting content that the listener likes. In one embodiment, the sound system includes a tuner for tuning to a frequency of a radio station and for converting a radio signal transmitted by the radio station to an audio signal; a memory unit for storing a first set of templates, wherein the first set of templates correspond to a to a set of songs, programs, commercials, or other content disliked by the user of the sound system; and a recognition processor, coupled to the tuner and to the memory unit, for receiving the audio signal, generating templates from the audio signal, and comparing the generated templates to at least one of the templates within the first set of templates. If one of the generated templates matches one of the templates within the first set of templates, the tuner is automatically tuned to a new radio station. In this manner, the sound system automatically tunes to a new radio station when the current radio station broadcasts content that the user of the sound system has indicated a dislike thereof.

    • A channel mapping system has a data source containing data indicative of the geographic range of channels broadcast in at least one selected region and a channel determination module that uses data indicative of a location in conjunction with the data source to determine a preferred channel. The preferred channel may be an FM channel. A transmitter is used with a portable media player to broadcast audio data contained on or received by the portable media player over the preferred channel. The media can be received by a corresponding receiver set to the same preferred channel. Adjustments to the channel settings can be determined repeatedly so that, as a preferred channel changes with location, an automated process or a user facilitated process can be used to change the channel settings on each of the transmitter and the receive. A location identification system such as GPS can be used to identify the location.
