In one embodiment, the oscillator includes a current source circuit is connected between a terminal for a first supply potential and the connecting terminal of the resonator and supplies the connecting terminal with a current source current which varies periodically at an oscillator frequency. A current sink circuit is connected between the connecting terminal of the resonator and a second supply potential, where the current sink circuit draws a current sink current from the connecting terminal, said current sink current varying periodically at the oscillator frequency and being negatively fed back to the current source current.

摘要： A voltage controlled oscillator has a cross-coupled negative resistance cell formed as an integrated circuit connected to off-chip components of a high-Q resonant tank circuit. To counteract spurious oscillations brought about by package parasitics caused by the interconnection of the chip to the external components, the cell is provided with a degeneration impedance. Typically, a pure inductor is used if all the elements of the tank circuit are off-chip. In a case where the tank circuit includes an on-chip fixed capacitor, the degeneration impedance may take the form of a capacitor.

摘要： An apparatus and method are provided for increasing the effective Q-value of an oscillator so that the required Q-value can be reached with the use of a low Q-value oscillator. In this apparatus and method, the FM noise is measured at the output of the oscillator by an FM detector and the output of the FM detector is fed back to the control input of the oscillator. By using this negative FM feedback, frequency variations in the oscillator output are suppressed by applying a correction signal at the control input of the oscillator. The amount of suppression depends on the loop gain of the FM feedback loop and the amount of suppression is proportional to the loop gain so that the effective Q-value of the oscillator is proportional to the loop gain. As a result of correcting the FM noise measured at the oscillator output by using a negative FM feedback loop, the effective Q-value of the oscillator corresponds to the original Q-value multiplied by the loop gain of the FM feedback loop so that the effective Q-value of the oscillator is increased.

The oscillator is configured to produce negative feedback for the amplifier in a cavity mode relative to short circuit terminations or open circuit terminations of a cavity modelling the oscillator at frequencies offset from a carrier frequency. The oscillator has a loss of less than 4.00 dB for a bidirectional trip through the cavity at the frequencies offset from the carrier frequency.

摘要： A voltage-controlled oscillator according to the present invention comprises: a transistor, where the drain electrode is grounded, the gate electrode is connected to a resonator whose resonant frequency is adjustable according to a voltage applied to a voltage-dependent capacitance diode electromagnetically coupled with the resonator, an output signal is output from the source electrode; a resistor connected in gate bias circuit or source voltage supply circuit for detecting a low-frequency noise component generated in the transistor, where the detected low-frequency noise component is amplified and fed back to the voltage-dependent capacitance diode so as to cancel a phase-noise component generated in the voltage-controlled oscillator. The above-described voltage-controlled oscillator may be further provided with a reference crystal oscillator to which the voltage-controlled oscillator is phase-locked. Thus, a microwave voltage-controlled oscillator excellent in phase-noise characteristics of the oscillated frequency is accomplished though there is employed a GaAs FET which is not good in a low-frequency noise characteristic.

摘要： A frequency oscillator and a frequency multiplier multiplying the signals from the oscillator contain inherent phase noise. A phase noise canceller removes phase noise, due to both the oscillator and the multiplier, by inserting a delay in one path and comparing phases of the delayed signal and the undelayed signal. This comparison may be either fed back to the tuning port of the oscillator or fed forward to a phase shifter which shakes off the phase noise. The delay may include a delay line, a cavity or any other suitable device which produces a phase shift. The phase noise canceller may also be designed to remove the total phase noise of the system, including additive phase noise from sources other than the oscillator and multiplier. The canceller may be calibrated and may be designed to reduce periodic response thereof.
