    • A thermal sensing system for providing thermal protection to an electronic circuit breaker that does not require any additional components. The layout of the conductive traces on the printed circuit board are dimensioned and configured so that the ratio of primary current to primary conductor thermal mass heating is correlated with the ratio of secondary current to secondary thermal mass heating. A voltage at a semiconductor junction in the rectifier behind the secondary transformer is measured, and a temperature or heat is calculated based on the voltage. Because this temperature or heat calculation is correlated with the temperature or heat of the primary conductor, a trip routine can be added based on the measured voltage for thermal protection of the primary conductors. A thermal history of the ‘primary thermal mass’ is also provided for robust thermal protection of the circuit breaker load and primary conductors.

    • The present invention provides an apparatus and a method for accurately detecting abnormal conditions of a motor. A ΔTc/Tj detector detects a difference (ΔTc) between an environment temperature and a temperature of a field-effect transistor (FET) which turns on and off electric power supplied to a DC motor. A diagnosis control unit detects abnormal conditions such as a motor lock and a short circuit of the DC motor based upon the obtained difference. When the motor lock has been detected, the diagnosis control unit controls a pulse width modulation (PWM) control unit and a PWM oscillator (PWMOSC) and makes a frequency and duty cycle of a PWM signal lower. When the short circuit has been detected, the diagnosis control unit controls a gate driver and turns off the FET.

    • A system and method is disclosed that provides a thermal shutdown circuit that generates a plurality of temperature warning flag signals. Each temperature warning flag signal represents a different temperature. The thermal shutdown circuit comprises a plurality of inverter circuits in which each inverter circuit has a different temperature turn-on threshold. A temperature to binary code converter receives the temperature warning flag signals from the inverter circuits and generates a plurality of binary coded signals that represent a temperature that is detected by the thermal shutdown circuit. A host controller unit uses the temperature information from the binary coded signals to shut down subsystems in advance of an abrupt thermal shutdown of a system.

    • A thermal shutdown system that can accurately detect a chip overheat condition or a local overheat condition is described. This system can include a first shutdown circuit triggered by the chip overheat condition and a second shutdown circuit triggered by the local overheat condition. The second shutdown circuit can be located near the heat-generating component on the IC. The first shutdown circuit can be located in another area of the IC. A common temperature independent signal, which indicates whether a local overheat condition is anticipated, can enable one shutdown circuit and disable the other shutdown circuit. An enabled shutdown circuit can respond to a temperature sensitive signal to indicate a fault condition, i.e. Ea chip/local overheat condition.
