    • Three-dimensional images are produced within a transparent cathode-ray tube by directing a plurality of electron beams into a cloud of phosphorescent particles and causing the beams to intersect at a point within the cloud. Each individual beam's current is maintained at less than the threshold of luminescence of the particles but the combined currents may be caused to exceed that threshold by a controlled amount thereby producing light spots of variable brightness at the beam intersection point, which point may be directed into any part of the volume of the cloud. The particle cloud is produced by a high-gradient electric field pump. Use of the pump for particle cloud production in such applications as beam testing is also described.

    • The appearance of depth in a two-dimensional image on a television screen or the like is achieved by optical bending means positioned between the image plane and the observer. The optical bending means produces a horizontal shift of points in the image such that the left and right eyes of the observer see a different spacing between pairs of points. The optical bending means can be in the form of a transparent undulating sheet, or can be in the form of undulations incorporated in the envelope of a television tube. It is positioned sufficiently close to the image plane that any pair of rays diverging from any point and striking the bending means continue to diverge.

    • A cathode-ray tube arrangement for presenting third dimensional effects without the use of special glasses and without mechanical motion. The device combines the features of integral photography with a unique set of electron optics duplicating the action of the ''''fly''s eye'''' lens array looking at a moving point of light. A mosaic of tiny pictures is generated at the phosphor plane, and these are carried forward to the focal plane of the lens array through a fiber-optic face plate. These multiple pictures represent the light rays from a point of light as some position in the image space. The electron beam within the tube acts in a manner equivalent to the source of light for the picture mosaic. Ordinary deflection and focusing circuits are used to provide for shifting the image of the point of light very rapidly, and beam intensity modulating means are used to produce a complex flickerfree three-dimensional presentation in the image space.
